    Good day all,

So I'm trying to get to the SRS ECU in front of the shifter, in removing the console, the last screw (of course!) Threads are stripped and the head is recessed, it just spins.

I tried getting a screwdriver behind the carpet and putting back pressure on it which I was able to do but it didn't help the screw move at all.

Any suggestions before I drill it out?

    Thank you!

Use a clip remover behind the screw and put pressure on it as you screw it out

That is for threads that are stripped

For head stripped.. carefully tap in a Philips screw driver or the next size hex

Use a cheap screwdriver or hex driver so that it gives to screws

Stripped threads not head, thank you, will try that

With the raised washer which comes up around the screw head, can't really seem to get behind the screw head

I removed it by using vise grips, but i am not sure if you can grip the head of the screw though. I think maybe I was just lucky.

Try a very thin screwdriver or two small screwdrivers (may need a helper )

    Thank you all

Since the washers are basically a well that the screw drops into and it's screwed down quite flush, I'm not having any luck with leverage

Am going to give it a solid attempt with these, nothing I haven't been able to grab with these, one of my favorite tools, if that doesn't work, I guess it's the dental chair!

Your best bet is to gently hammer in a Torx bit. The Ferrari body fastenings are like cheese and will readily deform to accept the torx bit.

Try filling the head with epoxy resin like Araldite and set the allen key into it overnight.

Time to break out the drill. I keep an assortment of all the different fasteners and typically replace any that show any type of wear, because I’m OCD and can’t help myself.

Use a Dremel tool, with a flat cut off round blade and make a straight line across the top of the screw to use with a flat head screw driver.

I don't believe it's the head of the screw stripped, it's the threads of the screw stripped not allowing it to back out

Right, Lorenzo, the head in this instance is good. Allen wrench turns the screw fine, but when it turns, it doesn't back out, just spins

I say get the washer from behind the head of the screw out of there. Bend it break it whatever you gotta do to get the washer out. Then get a pair of wire cutters behind the head of the screw and place a small block of wood midway of cutter for leverage. Press down on the handle of cutter for pressure and try to unscrew it

The washer goes down, so not easy to do that

I was able to get behind the head and apply pressure, I think at this point there are no longer any threads to catch

Maybe cut a small slit in the carpet to the screw hole. That should allow you to get the carpet out of the way. Maybe that would allow enough room for you to get leverage behind the screw head with the carpet thickness gone (?)

Was hoping to not have to damage anything, but definitely have to consider it, thank you

Drill the head off, takes 4.6 minutes, remove the cover, and then you have access to everything.

Thank you Allen, appreciate all the attention from everyone to such a relatively small problem of mine.

    I will post the outcome!

The blind nut in the panel may be spinning and not the screw. Very common especially on the underside screw/nut assemblies that hold on the under panel. I have had to drill out a couple of those and instal new captive blind nuts. The tool I used is "Wetols" rivet nut tool(Amazon). Seems like M6 is the nut/screw size. You might as well pull away the carpet to see what you are dealing with. Or, clamp the spinning screw/washer/rivnut with a vise grip and drill it out. Then pull back the carpet and install the new captive rivet nut.

Thank you, good point, I was wondering if it was screwed into an insert, threaded panel or other.

Will see if I can figure out how the carpet is attached

Yep. That is a "rivet nut". Or a "blind rivet nut". My guess is that the screw is rusted and seized and the rivet nut "barrel" is spinning in the panel.

I'm hoping for 3 pages on how to get a screw out. But seriously drill it out end of story
