I didn't know what to name this thread. Anyways, I was just wondering why you need a permit to build something in your own property. I mean I can understand if you want to build a 6 story barn, and you need to get a permit, but why do you need to get a permit to put up a shed in your own backyard? It is your own property, and I think you should be able to build anything you want as long as it is not totally outrageous.

    Two reasons.

    Code enforcement.

    Revenue.

The city will monitor the quality of the build to ensure that all building codes are followed.

Now that the city knows about the increased value of the property they can adjust your taxes :D

There are probably a lot of reasons, not the least being safety. I think the city wants to make sure things are built to code, no short cuts. It's another way to generate income for the city.

I'm currently in the midst of trying to get a permit to build a new garage. I live in a community that has an association, actually two associations. About 6 months ago I submitted plans to the city and the associations. The city approved quickly, but one of my neighbors wouldn't sign off on the plans. We re-did the plans resubmitted to city and associations with more submittal fees. Still waiting to hear from the city. It's been a really big PITA and we haven't even started the fun part yet.

Yeah, your garage construction is what sparked this thread. Why do neighbors have to sign off on it? Is it because they think it will be ugly?

if the shed is less than 8x10 no permit needed. if its 8x10 or a little bigger i would not get a permit because its not a perminent fixture, meaning it can be moved or taken down. perminent fixture greater than 8x10 need permits.

I care about the youth of this nation. Now get to your homework and stop slacking off. Have you ever heard the saying "little boys should be seen and not heard"?

Some people are not as considerate, that's why there are codes, and zones.

If you care that much about the youth of this nation then start some sort of program for inner city kids who do not recieve educations, and are out on the streets selling crack. I do my school work, I get A's in all of my classes. I work hard.

Part of the reason for permits is that people are stupid. They build things too close to the property line. They put structures on top of septic drain fields. They start a project and never finish it. They THINK that they are qualified to do construction, electrical, and plumbing work when they don't know which end of the hammer to grab.

We have seen several cases here lately of decks collapsing, causing serious injuries and deaths. The standard of construction on these has been far below code levels, and never would have been granted permits or passed inspections.

In most cases, I can understand why permits are necessary. As to the fees they charge for them and the time it takes to grant them, that's another story.

We have to get a neighbor impact form signed off by all impacted neighbors. They don't want you doing anything that will negatively impact the home values. Neighbors also want to weigh in if for instance their view is being blocked, etc.

One of those was mailed to my house a couple of months ago, and the neighbor lived about 5 houses away, we could barely even see the house. Could noise from construction also be a reason?

I know of one neighbor who protested where someone's pool equipment was going to be placed. They said the motor was too near their bedroom. The people putting in the pool had to put the equipment further away from the pool to make the neighbors happy. By moving the equipment the costs went up since they now had to run gas lines, electrical, etc. much furhter.

If you're talking about the construction noise, you just need to be considerate of your neighbors and not start too early in the a.m.

I remember once I was standing at the permit counter waiting to hand in some plans, and there was a nice lady in line in front of me. When it came to her turn, I could hear everything they were discussing. She wanted to do a very minor home remodel - take down part of one interior wall, add a small extension on one room, put in a new window or two. The inspector told her what she would need to draw up for her application, some of the "ins and outs", etc. She told him what her budget was for the job. Then he said, "You realize there is a fee for the permit?" "How much?" "Oh, about $4000".

    "YOU'RE F*UCKING KIDDING ME !!!!!"

She couldn't help it, it just popped out.

An exterior wall blew off of the shop I was working in recently. The city immediately made the building owner get a demolition permit to remove the wall that had already fallen over. I think that was entirely for the sake of revenue.
