Hi long time lurker first time poster! Many moons ago, I decide to take my 246gts apart and rebuild to keep. Then my business collapsed, then my helth took a hit, lost pretty much everything, but managed to keep, my wife, my kids and the Dino. In fact my wife and kids threatened to leave if I parted with it. Now I'm getting back on my feet, financially and otherwise. No one wants me to part with the dino, my kids grew up with it etc.etc. But time is the problem and rather than see it stay in its present unfinished form and with no way to bring it to the front burner for at least two years, I am thinking of letting it go. I do not necesseraly want money for it, I do not want to whore it out on ebay etc. A trade perhaps for a less famous stablemate, I always wanted a 308gt4, I used to race Ducatis so I am looking for a 450desmo and a 250 mach1. I am quite likely to dither back and forth on this, but I need to be driving a Ferrari again. I think that's the motivator.
Would you consider this as a trade? (8 years restoration, I know what you mean) regards, Ricky Image Unavailable, Please Login
Got it converted USA to Euro. Bought the Euro side lights, never added them, decided that the car looked cleaner that way (it rubs so nicely when waxing the car!). Got the tidbits neatly stowed away in a box. And before any more remarks on the mirror/16" wheels. All the original parts are there, but that is not the issue/thread here. It is just when restoring your own car you create a special bond with the car and that will make the decision to continue or to sell even harder. Dignini I wish you wisdom, inspiration, and a lot of common sense, because restoring a car is something masochistic. In my case I did lose my girlfriend, being blamed for spending more time beneath the car than beneath her! Ricky
My advice? If your kids really love the car, then put it in your will for them. Unless you have no place to store it and need to get it out of the garage or basement, it won't hurt the car any more to sit there unrestored than it will to be sitting somewhere restored and undriven. If your kids really won't ever restore it or appreciate it, find someone that you know will restore it and love the car as you do, then sell it to that person and make him promise to keep you posted how it's going. If you decide to part with it, there are about 20 guys on this site that would buy it in a heartbeat and do a fantastic job restoring it. I would be one of them if my wife would let me, but I think I would be living in the shed if I brought home another Fcar. Birdman
i vote keep it for the kids to finish and keep in the family..... or take my euro 911 and some cash and i will finish it, depending on how "apart" it is !! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks I'm quite surprised at the emails. It's a hard decision to make, I've had it for 30 Years! Cheers Luigi
Thanks Birdman!, And make that 21 persons! Girlfriend has already left me, so no problem there! Just finished the GT4 (this week will do the last thing, put on the stainless steel manifolds and muffler, and she will be better than new), so before I start to feel the side effects from not having to spend the weekends and nights in the garage, I can do with a new project. Luigi, you have the Dino for more than 30 years, so that makes it a member of the family, how can you even consider it! Have a nice weekend all of you at F-chat! Ricky
Nice! Gotta give it the respect it deserves, but even as a kid, the posters on the wall were Alfas and Ferraris...as well as Lollobrigida not everything Italian though, there was Welch and Andress and Christie to name but a few.
If you decide to sell, take some time to determine value. If the car is complete, in boxes, stored properly, it still has significant value, don't give it away for a song. I saw a bad GTS fetch over $90K recently, so a solid car, even if apart, is gonna fetch a pretty good buck. Now, if it was my car, I'd stick the boxses in the corner, work on it when I could, nd revive it at my own pace. You know what a great car it is, or was, when together, and you're not gonna get the opportunity to buy another one for less than what you'll end up into this car for. My vote, HANG ON, REASSAMBLE AS TIME PERMITS.
Thanks for the input. Do I find kindred spirits here or what! Even the guys who would like to buy it are telling me to hang on...I'll have to post some pics. Yep all in boxes. Originally this all started when someone backed into me at a gas station.( not insured) I didn't want a part respray and originally I was only concerned with getting the body right and eliminating any rot, didn't find much really and I was going to put it all back....Then I looked at the windshield and it has a couple of imperfections or the Chrome here and there. The radiator needs to be flushed, well its old I should get a new one...alternator, brake lines, hoses etc. etc...I wont't do it half way and I don't like looking at it not being able to drive it. I thought if I could get some other toys I could enjoy now it might make me feel better
Go get this Mondial for 13K and drive it until you're ready to restore the Dino. At that price you could sell the Mondial in a few years and drive it practically for free (except maintenance). You have a toy, and the kids/wife won't get irritated about the Dino being gone. You'll regret selling it.
We love Dinos, fo' sure! No one here is gonna rec'cy selling......... Here's the thing I've noticed, and it's a killer on these cars....the difference between 'perfect' and 'close enough' is the difference between "on the road" and "parked in the barn".. It can literally be tens of thousands$$$$$ on some models.. Of course I vote for finishing it and enjoying it, you should have just repaired crash damage originally, you'd have been driving it all these lost years, with mismatched paint. Think about THAT! But don't look back on it, only forward! Glad to hear it is looking up, for you! There was a Cavallino article about a rare racer, recently completed, the Owner reflected he had been at rock bottom three times, during ownership! Best wishes, best of luck...the Internet has actually made it much easier, since you parked this car........
Of course I vote for finishing it and enjoying it, you should have just repaired crash damage originally, you'd have been driving it all these lost years, with mismatched paint. Think about THAT! bigtex It was just a small dent and scratch, at the time I could have fixed for a few hundred but..........I was invincible then! There are a few good things about the internet, and without getting mushy, getting emails from all over is really nice Thanks luigi
My aim was always to make it correct, make every part work the way it should. Not something just for show but something to drive and enjoy. I do not know how to make it perfect, but I know how to drive it. Now at what point does one say O.K. this car should be a show car and this should be a driver?
