My friend has a Pronto and I loved playing with it. I would suggest that.

For a more affordable brand, check out the Harmony lineup. I must warn you though that their latest model (880) has some serious deficiencies because of their focus on form over function. I would stick with one of their earlier models like the 676. Many people prefer them over the pronto's.

Pronto's are very flexible, but a pain in the ass to set up and many people don't like the lack of tactile feedback.

X-10 works great and there is no need to rewire the whole house. I have mine set up this way and use a Sony touchscreen remote to control everything. Check out www.x10.com for control mods, switches, remotes etc. I had considered buying up the the Pronto but held off because of some of the same complaints heard here.

That is too funny! I have the same one and the thing was so damn hard to program the macros it is just an accent piece on my coffee table. Now I use the Harmony 880's that you hook up to your computer, enter in the model of your equip. and they configure it from their site in 5 min. best 250.00 remote around! I keep thinking someone will come over that knows how to program that Pronto but it hasn't happened yet!

I can program them, but I live in New Zealand. However, there might be a way if you have the file for the remote saved to your computer and you can dock the computer to your remote.

I don't normally sell the Philips to clients but I have used the software to program other people's remotes. If the backlight is too bright when learning button functions off your original remote controls, you get interference. So when learning codes, this backlight must be turned right down and don't learn them in bright light, near plasma TVs or on a shiny surface.

I also have a commercial account with Philips NZ and can access the software for the programming and customising of their remotes. The infra-red codes need to be imported using your computer onto the remote for the easiest results. Or type in your model on this website and then look up support for it to download the latest software (firmware) for your remote: http://www.p4c.philips.com

Also check out www.remotecentral.com for more support info and forums on different brands of remote controls.

Using a computer, you can customise buttons and backgrounds for the higher-end Philips LCD remotes, e.g. even a picture of your Ferrari in the background using a jpeg picture. It also means you can back up your programming just in case something happens to the remote.

One of the good things about the Prontos is you can program macros. This means at the press of one button you could have, for example, all of your home theatre turn on and a DVD start playing. Of course, if delays aren't programmed in between each function, the remote gets flooded with commands and this can cause it to freeze when executing a macro.

By the way, if you do get a Philips LCD remote, I'd advise on getting the docking device too, otherwise you'll be buying batteries all the time!

What a generous guy...a free remote. Lucky dog.

You don't need the recommendation now but Monster just released a new line of remotes that are decently priced. Not the best though but decent for the money.

Lighting Pacific in New Zealand does Tristar LED light bulbs that can fit into existing downlights. These light bulbs are about $130 NZ each. A $40 IR remote control can make them fade, strobe, flash and smooth. Also make them change colour.
