My wife's had three consecutive M3, leased. The current M3 lease is up in mid April and I've been looking as it's somewhat of a difficult transition time for BMW convertibles with the only current ones being the Z4 and 6 series. 4 series can be ordered but no real deals to be made. The current M3 was a hell of a deal, nothing down, $900 per month incl sales tax at $82+K MSRP for 36 months 10K/mo. Looking to replicate but not so easy this time around. Z4 3.5iS seems like the only BMW deal, not quite what I got with the M3 but not far off. 4 seats not really needed due to the kids being grown up

F-Type Jag an option, some better deals but not as good as the Z4. Boxster another option but really want to lease, not buy for her car these days. Porsche doesn't seem to lease reasonably but maybe a bank out there does that makes sense, anything out there?

What other options exist? I was considering Mercedes, the E series convertibles are ugly, powerless, and don't seem to lease well, have decent resale, or otherwise be a good option. The SLK, is it still available? None here in SB. Still haven't looked at Infiniti G50's and Lexus options, Infiniti I saw at Pebble and looks nice, way better than the last, but no dealer here in SB. Chevy Camaro, no thanks and Mustang(current) really no thanks. Corvette looks interesting, but the SB dealer apparently didn't sell enough C6s so no C7's for them at this point is what I'm told. Crazy in wealthy SB! Thought I could at least see a Coupe there but nothing and nothing coming in.

What am I missing if anything new?

Used I'm considering a Boxster, first year of PDK possibly, maybe an XK(R) Jag, Certified M3 or 3 series conv or other. I think she'd be good with a car thats 30K miles or less, no older than 2009 or so, etc. I thought maybe a SL Merc or a AMG SLK as well. The depreciation on certain models is certainly a positive with the potential costs to fix a negative.

All thoughts appreciated on this! Thanks in advance!

Well taken care of or fully restored Mercedes W113 230SL 250SL or 280SL.. Modern drivability and comfort. Not depreciating. Fun and useful for daily commutes. $35K to $100K depending on condition.

A 2010 XKR can be had for half the price of new. Great car lots of power (2010 was the power increase also when the transmission button rose up when you start the car) and lost of luxury as well.

I drove an Audi S5 Cab for 60k+ miles and loved it. But, if she can do without a backseat, get the Boxster. I have driven one a couple of times when my 991s was in for service and it made me want to buy one...

A friend of mine recently got a great deal on a mint 2013 Boxster in dark blue with tan interior. What a phenomenal car!

    Just like this one:

While not a cab, I'm in a 2014 Cayman S while my 991s is being serviced and it drives and handles like a 911 did back in the air-cooled days, but faster...

Stretch a little bit and you are in 991 territory, they have very attractive leases too.

It's hard to beat a Boxster, but be really, really sure that you can do without backseat storage/seating. The firewall also precludes reclining the seats when you're taking a break on a long trip.

Would your wife be interested in a BMW 1-Series (plenty of used convertibles are hitting the market).

SLK is still available and was recently redesigned, but Z4 is the looker and probably better to drive (I had an SLK years back...)

I think it would be hard to beat the 2013-2014 Boxster. I drove an S with the PDK, and it may be the best sports car I've ever driven. Anecdotally, I've noticed some inventory on the Porsche dealer lots, and it has been out for a couple of years, so you may be able to do better on a CPO Boxster. Plus the options are stupidly expensive, so CPO can save you buckets of money.

Sorry but no way, still overpriced!

Boxster would be the best scenario I'd think, if the price is right. CPO makes sense as yes the options are crazy expensive, nice to get the depreciation on those. I'd like the PDK, I think started in 2011, or was it earlier? Actually like the looks of the past model vs. todays as well although I'm sure the new one's more evolved which is probably more important for my wife....

Had a great run of very good lease deals on BMWs, no one seems to match, ever, 991 lease deals, really? If I could lease one for zero down and under $1000K incl tax , I'm in.

Yes, SLKs make no sense after further research.

I do like the looks of the Infiniti Q50, any comments on them? The Lexus coupe looks pretty decent as well, I'm thinking the conv. will come out soon.

XKR conv was a good suggestion, been looking there. Lots of depreciation there.

Might just do the new 4 series one last time, then move on to a two seater.

This seems to be an interesting choice. May feel a bit big to her even though it probably isn't compared to the M3 convertible. I've been looking at a 2009 XKR convertible that is local to us with 53K miles, looks to be in good shape. Haven't had a chance to drive but understand it's the older engine with the 420 hp engine, still not too shabby.

Rear of the new ones looks narrower due to a narrower trunk lid lip and a few other things. Wondering what other differences their are other than the engine. Probably should drive the new one when drive the older one to compare. I assume handling is quite a bit better but wonder if anyone's experienced the 2009(and older that exist that are the same) vs. the newer ones and can comment on the differences.

Got to drive the 2013 Boxster S(huge fun) and the Z4 35is(also fun but not as). Love the Boxster looks better and would jump on one except one problem. It does not easily go in and out of my driveway. Rub issues except at one angle. She could just do that angle every time but it would require going past the house and turning around, a bit of a pain on our street. I don't think she's willing......

F Type nice but no trunk at all(Boxster is cavernous in comparison). She can't deal with that in a daily driver, no good for grocery runs or to costco at all.

Thanks for the help. Love to hear more about the XKRs!

Maybe she asked you to decide for her, but why not let her pick? My wife does and you might be surprised how affordable a 2008 Vantage V8 is. My wife loves hers.

And the C7 merits consideration, even if you have to travel to try it out.

4.2L XKR are amazingly cheap for the car you get.

I understand the desire to lease if you trade-in often, but buying has its advantages too. Perhaps if she like the BMW she currently drives you could buy at lease-end?

I have spent a lot of seat time in XKR's they are great GT cars they are solid pretty quick though because of their weight (not that the M3 convert is a lightweight either) they don't feel as fast as they are. Cabin is well insulated back sets give you extra storage room and lots of luxury inside including heated and cooled seats. Of course the transmission knob rising up when you start the car only gets a wow the first couple times it does help give the interior a clean look. Nice audio system as well though some say the touch screen is slow to respond I did not find it that way at all. I ended up going a different route but I may end up with on e at some point. Good luck.

F-type looked good, drove good, but too small as far as trunk space for a daily driver.

The used XKR conv I'm looking at is a 2009 so obviously I'd be purchasing there. Pen Feds got good used car rates so might use them. I wouldn't want to buy the M3 unless it was better maintained(not the manufacturer's recommended but beyond).

I've looked at XKRs as well, in fact just posted about it in another thread. The depreciation makes them great deals. There were a number of changes in 2010 - new engine, more HP, new interior (with the little rising thing), and some exterior changes as well. If you happen to be going by the SB Auto Group, stop in the jag service area and talk to Kevin. He's very familiar with the cars and we've found him to be very straightforward and honest. Last time I spoke to him, he recommended the 2010 forward models - we didn't talk details but I think it was more than they were better than that the earlier cars had problems.
