Cooking experts...quick question

    If Im making some creme brulee do I need a specialty culinary torch? Can I just use my candle lighting torch or will that put some unwanted chemicals into my dessert?

    If I do need a specialty culinary torch, where is the best place to find one before christmas? Ive tried two different Targets and a few other similar stores with no luck.

    try an LP gas torch available at the local hardware store.

    Depends on what the other guy is wearing...sometimes we change it up.

    Agree. Torch is more show, effect is the same...

    Need high heat to melt and carmelize the sugar before you burn the underlying mixture. A low temp candle lighter won't do it. While the propane plumbers torch will work, it's a pain because of the size and it must be upright, whereas to do the sugar you have to tip it over.

    Broiling works, but tends to heat up the ramekins or whatever you baked the brulee. It's better if the disk and brulee are cool and the sugar is warm.

    Get the special torch. <$40US.

    IIRC there is a Williams Sonoma at South Coast Plaza, they have them for sure....... If you wanna be cheap and practical just use a regular propane torch, should be available in most hardware departments for a few bucks.

    I always used a regular propane torch like the one below- held the dish in one hand and moved the flame around the sugar at an angle.

    Putting the dish on the counter and waving the torch over it just doesn't have the same amount of showmanship; chicks dig it when you might have to go to the ER while making their dessert.. I'm serious!
