It's interesting to look at the chateau on google maps to see the collection just sitting there in a field.

Because air friction subjected the plane to extreme heat during flight, the YF-12 was also used to study high-temperature phenomena unrelated to the plane itself. Perhaps the most significant of these studies was the Cold Wall Experiment, which involved exposing a cooled cylinder to the friction and heat of a Mach 3 environment. The cylinder, which was hollow, equipped with sensors, and mounted beneath the aircraft, was cooled with liquid nitrogen and insulated from the heat that was generated during flight. When the plane neared Mach 3, a primer cord was used to blow the insulation from the frigid cylinder. Temperature, pressures, and friction readings from the cylinder in flight were compared with information developed from theoretical analysis and wind-tunnel simulation. The findings were a major achievement in fluid dynamics research.

I love 240's, 340's, 440's and the turbo prop variants. Non radar like this one are the best looking. C-S stands for the airline they merged with in the mid 1950's.

I have about 200 hours in the T-29C and T-29D from nav and EWO school. Those R2800s leaked oil like a sieve, but never missed a beat. Cracked Dad up that my trainer used the same engine (detuned a bit) as the P-47D he flew in combat in WW-II.

Hi Taz, could you share a picture of your Dad's P-47? Did it have any nose art? Thank you.

By late in the war there was a pretty standard little scroll where you could put a name. Dad's had Pat on it. Let me see if I can find a photo. I posted a painting of Dad's P-47D in the photo thread.

2800 was about as good as round motors got.

Brian- Yup, they could take quite a bit of damage and still get you home. All the later war Navy fighters used it, too.

Not a quality photo, but I did the best I could leaping up from my desk after 11 single seaters screamed over the house in formation. Turns out its the Italian Airforce aerobatics group, Tricolore, practicing yesterday for an airshow today at NAS Oceana. A fun perk to living on the lower Chesapeake!

It also seemed like the limit on size and complexity. The bigger, later engines never lived up to the same level of reliability and trouble free service. Part of the reason I always say it was a good thing for aviation and air travel jets came along.

No photo (yet! If it comes over again?).

Yankee Air Force (KYIP - Willow Run, MI) B-25 Mitchell has now made two low passes over our home. Sounds like a flying box car. Low ceilings today so a bit surprised it is up. We are about 8 miles NNW of the airport.
I did see their C-47 go over for the first time two days ago. Nice to see it back in the air! :)

Analog engineers were taught/given tools to solve problems themselves using ingenuity, common sense, and their hands on education.

Digital engineers rely on virtual tools to solve problems. Some aren’t capable of living in reality.

No, ‘Digital’ engineers are just much more focused on Safety. Mangement is far more risk adverse. The SR-71 is my favorite plane in the world, but 1/3rd of them were lost. That just isn’t acceptable anymore.
