Bob, in the Pacific my father was Chief of the Boat at 24. He was a Reserve Midshipman on December 7 and a few days later a Seaman 3rd in the regular Navy. Rank came quickly.

They had an "X" version too. I think the X was what powered the plane Howard Hughes nearly died in.
We owe a lot to the designers of the turbine engines or we would have depended on nightmares like that to get big airplanes around.

There is a good anecdote about where and how well you slept on a ship depending on cargo. Regular hardware you slept on deck with your life vest. A gasoline tanker you slept in your warm bunk.

Came out to a dark airplane on Ground power this morning.. That's smashed bugs and Dew on the windscreens backlit by the ramp lights. Pretty neat shot.

Then got to shoot an Autoland this morning to 1/16 mile and 800ft RVR visibility! Saw the Runway lights at about 50'. What a life

Not for Cat 3. RVR is controlling. That particular runway has 600ft rvr as the minimums. Reported at approach clearance was 800/1000/and roll out was better than 3000

There was a ground up restoration on a P-38 a number of yrs ago at a restoration and air museum located on Co. Springs General Aviation Air Port. This was the first P-38 I ever saw in person. It was litterly a ground up restoration on a dig find in a South American County. Got to sit in the Cockpit when most of the Aluminum exterior was finished. That was extremely tiny, the cannon sights were almost toylike in appearance and use. The gauges etc. hadn't been in place yet, nor fuselage completed. The tail section was almost complete. The Cockpit looked extremely form fitting and uncomfortable. The pilot a C White was noted with a number of kills located port side forward of the cockpit. C. White inscribed with the kills. I believe he was a Captain. I understand he got to visit his aircraft prior to his death in the early 2000's. Had a number of pictures, but misplaced them after a number of moves from Co.

720's? I think that you are correct, Jim. The number one and number 4 strut doesn't have a turbo compressor on it and the leading edge glove is evident.
