A couple years ago I was on Location shooting for Toyota. One of the locations was a winery in Napa Valley and the office / guest house was very cool. My guess it's a 1000 sq. ft. or less, including the open breezeway in between the living area and bedroom. The roof is a simple pro-panel steel type. What is not shown in the photos is a small galley kitchen and a bathroom. This would be a great place even on an acre or so. For the most part it's a frame / rock or? and 9 walls made out of 8x10 glass of which three are sliding doors. I wonder what the construction costs might be given the simplicity of the structure?, less the pool of course. Today's Market (West Coast) $250.00 s.f. The expense will be the steel frame to take lateral or masonry columns / walls to take lateral. Darryl
also, keep in mind, the smaller the house the greater the cost /sqft. no large bonus(cheaper to build) rooms to lower the sqft cost. ed
To me, the biggest expense in this as a home would be meeting the Title 24 energy requirements. A structure like that would require quite a bit of compensation for the large area of fenestration. Additionally, that structure was obviously built in an era with less concern for shear strength in the walls. Today, expect to hire a structural engineer to either require "strong walls" between the glass or an elegant cross-cabling system. I think people who embark on building a house seem to think the materials are what get you. While nice stuff certainly costs more, the real expenses come when your design starts deviating from the average and the typical. With all that said, if you like the look and functionality of that structure, I think there are many ways to achieve that without breaking the bank. Plus, hiring the right people on a project like this can make a big difference in the end cost.
