I took the ash tray assembly out of my 348 to de-goop it and then reverse-CAD it for my ongoing 3D printing project, and while I was just cleaning the ash tray door it occurred to me that it seems to have a pleasing proportion that I am familiar with as an engineer. I pulled up some google images and held the ash tray door in front of them and whadaya know my hunch was right. It's a golden rectangle! I've hidden golden rectangles in designs of my own for work before, so I was delighted to see that Pininfarina did the same thing with the ash tray door. Now I wonder what other hidden design goodies are on these cars...

It appears to get better. The area from the front of the ash tray surround to the "corner" forward of the shifter also appears to form a golden rectangle, as does the area from the "corner" up to the leather radio cover panel. Very clever design features, and I'm sure there's more...

Damn it, now I'm going to have to Google what a golden rectangle is. Never heard of it.

I've been a design engineer for close to 30 years and have no idea what you are talking about :)

I guess they didn't think it that important. The 355 ash tray is 3x3.5 or a ratio of 1.1666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666......:) (Why do we post **** like this???)

In Alabama they have found a .22LR round fits perfectly. Just don't use it for more than 7.5 amps.

It's the Western version of fengshui. This ratio is present in nature, and universally harmonious. May the force be with you.

Huh... being in Alabama, I'll have to remember that tip.

    All the best,

This thread has diverted off the Kris' original post pretty significantly.

I think his observations are pretty neat and in my search here on fchat , have never before been discussed. Some of Fibonacci ratios occur in nature obviously without a designer involved , but as some have mentioned above including Kris, they are intentionally included in their work.

As Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician, it wouldn't surprise me if his ratios were intentionally included in pininfarina or Ferraris work. This relatively simple example is very cool.

Here's a link to a Wikipedia page on Fibonacci for those who care to educate themselves on this topic.

That rectangle and the associated math is included in my business logo as we see and use Fibonacci proportions and ratios in designing and analyzing cosmetic dental cases. The ratios and the expressions of them are seen throughout nature.

Well one thing is for sure. Based on the looks of the 488 and the 812 Ferrari should go back to Pininfarina.

Totally agree. Pininfarini is the back bone of Ferrari.

Even more so the design should be done in Italy by Italians

Too many computer generated designs just look like poo poo today
