I just checked my coolant and it's a bright green but it has a very slight "oily" feel to it when you rub it between your fingers. There is no film on top of the coolant in the tank. Not being familiar with the type of coolant used is the slight "oily" feel normal? I wiped off what had dripped onto the tank and there was no oily residue at all -- which is what I would expect if it was actually oil and the coolant level was exactly where it was a week or so ago when I last checked it.
    Thanks
    Alan

    Hi Alan
Sounds like the glycol in the coolant.

    AKA, normal.

If there were oil it would turn into a brownish goo and be pretty obvious.

Alan- Sounds like they used the good stuff. Either G05 or G48 (if you do not like nitrites) works great and the G48 is OEM fill in Mercedes.

Yeah this is normal after having it sprayed all over my engine bay last weekend and then getting drenched in it earlier today when draining the front radiators from underneath.

My coolant was lovely and clean coming out of the car after being changed last about two years ago but the expansion tank fluid looked a bit murky. The top of the coolant has a very thin oily shine to it but I don't know if this is the coolant or more likely remnants of when the gearbox heat exchanger failed with the previous owner. Was flushed then and I flushed it heavily again today and then sucked out any water that was left in the tank with a large syringe. Could probably do with removal and cleaning thoroughly tho.

Okay thanks guys I'll sleep good tonight. Can't be too anal retentive on that as a leaking transmission cooler is not something to sneeze at.

I guess the dealer used that as they did the last major. I'll have to ask my indie what he uses as he'll be doing the next one at 30k -- oh wait a minute -- I need to sell it before then as it'll be unsellable after. :)

Alan- The dealer may have used a Shell product, but the high end coolants are all pretty good. G05 in mine now and will probably go to G48 this spring/summer. The two are compatible.

Anyone ever use PENTOFROST NF (blue)? I was told it was a good replacement for the GlycoShell
