No it seems to always be there. The engine sounds good runs good gauges are all on point but there's this whistle. I will read the thread. Thanks

Does the whistle vary with engine speed, or does it have a constant pitch? Does this happen all of the time or only when the car is in gear and moving?

So if it's not related to engine speed that maybe suggests air flow, fuel pump whine or maybe something in the exhaust. The only constant pitch sound in my car is the fuel pump, and it's only really audible at idle. These can make a racket when old and worn.

I know that the exhaust sampling ports, if plugged with regular bolts, will whistle at a more-or-less constant pitch. This is due, I believe, to it forming a small cavity that acts as a helmholz resonator. The plugs that Ricambi sell for this purpose have a step cut on the protrusion to eliminate this. Not saying this is what's happening, but are the sampling tubes intact or removed?

All idle speculation on my part with little data. It would be good to hear it.

Hmmmmm I was thinking my exhaust could be the culprit as it needs replaced in a bad way. That is a winter DYI project if I can find one for under 2 k that is. I can not find the video I will take new video this weekend and let you guys lend an ear on it. Thanks all

    Sampling ports?

I don't know if that's their official name. A set of tubes run from the header right where it meets the head and are topped with brass acorn nuts. There is one set of four for the front bank, and a set for the rear. Using these, you can sample each cylinder's exhaust with your 5 gas analyzer, or whatever. A very good idea -- not found on most cars!

Given that these are old cars, a lot of these have failed, and the owners have either cut and crimped-off the tubes (not good) or replaced them with common bolts (whistle) or specialist bolts that are designed to not whistle (better).

Sorry I don't have pic. Will try to find one...

EDIT: thread here with pics and a much better description than I gave: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/325356-sniffer-tubes.html

Further edit: It would be good to see if these are intact or have been modified in some way. Again, just wild speculation, but something that's easy to check.

Yup that's it. Those ports are plugged with bolts. There's the sound I bet. You nailed It I need to change those bolts.

I misspoke in a previous post (it's been a long day).

Correction: The replacement bolts that whistle are for the air injection ports, not the exhaust gas sampling stuff. You likely have this as my US spec. 83 QV has it.

IIRC, these are visible right on the head itself, just above where the exhaust header runners bolt on. Visible from above. So I think this is what you're seeing.

Google "Ferrari air injection plugs" to see what the manufactured units look like and to see if these (or some common bolt) are present on your car. Removal of air injection is _really_ common as the air pump is driven off of one of the cams, scary in and of itself.

    Sorry for the error.

EDIT: Just to be perfectly clear, ignore my assertion that the sampling ports have something to do with this in posts 30 and 32. This is what happens when I don't sleep enough. The canonical reference for air injection plugs would seem to be this: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/131252-air-injector-plugs.html

One last edit before I fall asleep: As an aside, a leak in the exhaust gas sampling stuff will make your car sound remarkably like a VW bus at idle. Very unimpressive!

Your shop said it was a Euro :) it's a US ;) Euros do not have these ports. Unless a different head is fitted, which does not happen that often. Hope you can eliminate the sound with replacing the bolts.

Hmmmmmm that part better be new as the shop put new water pump and all hoses new so I would only hope mine does not look like that. The bolts I speak of are part of the smog that was removed the tubes that were there are now plugged. I thought that were the bolts that we spoke of whistling.

That's correct and the intake manifolds. Like I said go back to the shop as they need to fix something if they replaced the hose connected to it :)

Post a video, we are a Youtube generation actually hearing the sound works so much better that a description of it.....
You wouldn't date a girl on a description if you had a photo available or visa versa. ;-)

Regarding hoses... I think 308 and Mondial engine bay is a mess of horrible hoses. Ferrari just seemed to chuck them in eveywhere, so the last thing I would do is to highlight them,
that's why I like black, even my firewall is black and oil filter. The idea being is that black hides everything and all you see then is the engine. The engine is the main feature for me,
and not all of its life support systems, all that stuff is a distracting I think.
See in the pictures here of Kato, how the black hoses and engine bay area make the engine
visually pop out of its setting......Cheers Bell. ;-)

That's one beautiful looking engine !

I like the way you painted the cam cover red -- That's how it should have been from the Ferrari factory.

I was looking at it running in the dark and I ssen the manifold glowing bright red. Temp. Was 180 on the gauge.
