This article may shed more light on the subject of radiator cap pressure rating and its relationship to coolant boiling points. It certainly dispels the use of a .9 bar cap. The benefit of adding Water Wetter to anti-freeze coolant system is another controversial subject for further reading.

BTW, T.Rutland sells an OEM cap for $35.

Using the numbers quoted in the article a difference of 0.1 bar in pressure results in a difference of less than 2.5 degrees Celsius in boiling temperature - it doesn't seem very significant to me? Or maybe that's what you meant as well?

I believe the number stamped on the cap is the pressure differential at which venting occurs - i.e. when the inside pressure exceeds the outside pressure by (say) 0.9 bar, the vent opens. Standard atmospheric pressure is around 1 bar, so venting would occur at an internal pressure of 1.9 bar, which equates to a boiling point for pure water of 119C / 246F, or higher in the case of a 50/50 antifreeze mixture.

Did kimpearsonusa ever find out what the cause of this leak was?
