Does anyone know where the coolant temp. gauge gets its signal? I don't think it is from the thermo switch at the bottom of the radiator as that is a simple on/off switch for fan control. Any help would be appreciated.

As I recall it is on the back of one of the cylinder heads.

I have looked through the diagrams and haven't found it. There is a temperature sensor located at the rear of the block between the two heads, but I think it is for the injection system and not the gauge.

Back of the head. Not the top of the block.

Rifledriver - I understood what you said and I should have put a ? at the end of my post. After your initial post I went back and looked at the two parts diagrams for the heads but I couldn't find anything that looked like a sending unit.
This is a mystery I guess as no one I've spoken to knows either exactly where it is.

Thank you very much for the info. Is this something that can be tested/replaced without removing the head?

For testing the instrument you first have to locate the wire/connector towards the sensor, disconnect it from the sensor and connect it to ground/chassis. The instrument should then read peak level when wire is grounded.

For testing the sensor the best would be to unscrew it and measure the ohms as you heat it. Ohms should decrease steadily as you heat it up. If no ohms are measured or values over 20K,replace the sensor.

    I think :)
