It seems to me that the above mentioned cars have very similar radiators and identical FIM overflow tanks. According to the spare parts catalogue there should be a pressure cap,
(0,9 bar = 15 lbs) on the overflow tank, and a 0,5 bar cap on the radiator, and not a blanking cap.
As I get contradicting answers from different people, even from professionnels, I would appreciate if someone could verify this by checking on a car.

This set up is also very common used on other Italian cars from this period.

    Have you looked here?

It would appear to differ with your assertions.

When I got my SII Espada it had a set of STANT lever style caps very much as you describe. It had a 7lb on the radiator and 14lb on the reservoir. I discovered that was not not original and replaced the radiator cap with a blanking cap as called for in the parts diagram of that car. Jaguar uses this same setup on the E-type.

You must use a blank cap on the radiator and a pressure cap on the overflow tank.
The given value of the tank cap is 0,5 ATM (bar) in the workshop manual.

When the engine is heating up, the water level in the system is rising due to thermal expansion, the water flows into the overflow tank by the connecting tube. When the engine is cooling down again, the water should flow back into the radiator, if the system is tight.

When You use a pressure cap on the radiator, the way back will be blocked by the lower seal of the pressure cap! The system can not work in its intented way then.

When You take a sharp look into the workshop manual, in one of the pictures explaining the refilling of the system, You can clearly see the blank cap lying next to the radiator.

That is the way these systems work on (more or less) every car with overflow tank.

    Hi all,
On some cars, the overflow tank is NOT pressurized. On my Alfa (1750 Berlina) the rad cap is a two way unit and the overflow tank is vented through a non-pressurized cap.
The same holds true for the Nissan vehicle that I have, the overflow bottle has a vent to the atmosphere. Regards Ian

But the parts manual looks like it's calling for a pressurized cap on the reservoir and a standard cap on the radiator's neck.

You can run a lower pressurized cap on the radiator and higher one of the tank then as long as the radiator cap is still open fluid will flow back from the reservoir as everything cools but what's the point?
