Ok, with the Scuderia Rampage just around the corner I have had several requests from drivers interested in purchasing scanners for their drive to Vegas.

    Any suggestions?
    Hand Held or Mounted?
    Where to buy?
How effective have they been in avoiding “The Man” ?
    Stories?

    Thanks!

The hard part is finding known frequencies local to the area. Scanner groups on the net usually have them. I have a handheld scanner, its discreet. It's like listening to the ball game, but in cop world. If they are not using their terminals, you can hear the dispatcher send a call out, and if the description is where you are at, that's your que to vamoos! Hopefuly, you or somebody knows penal code so you can uderstand what they are saying. For example, "Ten David and Seven Adam, I'm going to start you on a four five nine with possible nine two three's as well" So what the heck was said there? Two units were dispatched to a disturbance with possible shots heard. I know, it's not english.

Here in California, the revenue collection task force, *ahem*, I mean, that group known as the CHP( I think they had a hit TV show back in the 70's) uses a low band radio system(Motorola Rangr) whereas, everyone else is on UHF, trunked 800MHz, etc. The advantage of having the scanner with California's street collection agency, is that their portable radios shoot back signals to their car as a repeater. 154.905 MHz is the frequency of most of their portables, and if you hear anything on that band, it means they are CLOSE! Car to dispatch is on somewhere on the entire 42.000Mhz band. I know that doesn't help going to Nevada.. but you get the idea.

A scanner, used in conjunction with a radar detector is a good thing.

My good friend has one of these with all of the local frequencies downloaded into it. Seems to be the easiest solution, but I'll pick his mind when I see him tomorrow..

How effective are they? I can imagine that anywhere a group of cops would be patrolling or using aircraft, they'd be worth the money. They probably wouldn't be to useful in letting you know where Joe Doughnut and his buddy Radar are hanging out, however.

If you can figure out how to pick them up they can really help. On the days they don't have the inspection sticker roadblock here they time cars from a plane and radio down to the waiting fleet of cop cars on the ground. Unless you are tipped off about it you wouldn't know.
