Ferrari should dial up a 911
    Category: Today's thought
Once again, office chat has truned to the Ferrari Dino. Not for any reason than it's on the 'cars I must drive before I die list'. But it occurs to me (and others) that maybe Ferrari should make another one.
Image what a V6 engined Porsche 911-rivalling Ferrari could be like? A 70k price tag, a fabulous engine note and a squat, compact body that's an antidote to the ever-increasing girth of Maranello products.
Sure there's the small matter of toe treading with Maserati, but they make front-engined GTs. This would have to be a mid-engined sports car.
Aston Martin will have a proper 911 rival next year, wouldn't it be great if Ferrari did the same?

It would also be a good match to the Lotus in the super-light-weight sportscar classes. I'd love it. But at Ferrari volumes (not 911 volumes), 70K won't happen... maybe 125K. But 125K would be good placement between the new Modena and the Maserati... and would be reasonable price-wise versus the 911. The tough part is how to place it performance-wise... there's no room between 911 and 360. So, it would need to be lower horsepower to match lower weight, but give similar performance numbers. But with the similar numbers, the Dino would, with the lighter weight, be the preferred Ferrari on the track. That might work okay as it would be a bit less practical than the 360, having much less space. But damn it would make it HELL for me to choose the right car!

Thus, as a happy CS owner (its clear which Ferrari I want right now), I hope they don't intro a new Dino... it would make me unhappy! ;) I'd either have to spend too much (buy one of each), accept the less ideal track Ferrari to have the practicality, or accept the reduced practicality and ability to drive it across the country to have the best track Ferrari. I wouldn't like any choice!!! :( ;)

There are key features of the 911 that give it its appeal to me:

    1. Daily usability and reliability. Use a Ferrari every day? Purleease. They can't even build a manifold or a clutch that lasts, and the servicing is way too expensive. Their cynical attitude to parts prices annoys me too.

    2. Rear seats. I'd love a 911 because the family can come too, and thus the car could be used more, where the Ferrari is just a garage bunny to be used for drives out and about just for fun. Aston Martin haven't grasped this with the AMV8, so it isn't really a competitor in my eyes.

Ferrari already have a £70k car. Its called a second hand one.

    Robert.
