okay, this one is off the wall, but i bet SOMEBODY knows the score!

back about a dozen or more years ago i was in palm beach for a business thing. a friend of mine was, at the time, a reporter for one of the big newspapers. she had a former boyfriend (or something like that) who ran a landscaping company and happened to be housesitting one of the palatial mansions of the area. she took me there to give me a tour.

other than "****, this place is huge", i don't remember squat about the details of the place EXCEPT......

one of the bathrooms was done up in a tile that i totally fell in love with. unfortunately at the time i was told it was basically coral that in the early part of the century had been harvested and sliced into tile used in high-end construction. it's very verboten now, for obvious reasons.

does anybody (A) have any idea what this tile was that i saw and (B) know where one can find it "recycled"?

    tia,
    doody.

Huh, interesting question. If you used dead coral... of which most islands inthe area are made of, I can not think of why it would be banned.

That said, I have been spending upwards of 100,000 on tile, marble and otherwise, so my decorator knows all about it and I shalll ask him tomorow.

    (Still in Korea....sigh)

If it's such a nice look and sought after there has to be a nice eco-friendly fake one you can buy. Doesn't sound like you could reuse that stuff, it'd be too fragile. If you really wanted to be an environmental pirate I'm sure some banana republic would sell you some illegally.

Does it have to be alive when mined to get the look you want? If it does not, hell the whole fort at St Augistine is made of the stuff!!!

I am betting it was Malcome Healey's house in Palm Beach - his father just happend to be Austin Healey.

If I rememeber correctly he had a master bathroom done in Coral Tile - assortment of colors, etc.

I think there was some info on this - that I read about a few years ago - I think the last time you could get Coral tile was in the 1950's or so - in the US. You will find places like Indoneisa, etc. that would have been after this.

Do a search on 1950's Coral Tile - and see if that helps. You will probably then want to narrow your search for restoration, for sale, or something like that within your search results.
