Would someone teach me about the wheels J. Corbani kept on his Dino and seemed so fond of? IIRC, some recent thread suggested the new owner swap them out ASAP for safety issues. I cannot recall anyone else having after market wheels on a Dino (exception being DinoDan with wheels similar to factory but larger).
I had to go back and scan the threads....they were Gotti's......pretty similar to the Etoiles I use for 16"s... They are three piece alloys, the center is a casting and the front and rear bells are spun aluminum.....BBS uses the same method on the famous "basket weave" pattern.... It looks like he had some issues with air seals, a giant o-ring seals them where the three parts smash together, held by all the visible bolts. I don't see why you'd want to replace them due to age, unless there was some issues with deterioration.... A purist would want to go back to OEM, or order some fresh castings altogther, thru Napolis to match Dino Competizione.....
I liked those rims on Corbani's Dino. The OEM rims are boring with the exception of the "flares" rims. I thought that Gotti was out of business but I guess not. http://www.gbsalpine.com/wheel/gotti/eng.html
John had major issues with his Gottis. One of his failed while he was driving. He had it welded back together. In addition, he was missing a center cap and he couldn't get Gotti to respond. His travails are documented in much more detail in Corbani's Corner and elsewhere in the 206/246 section threads and postings. Synchro, if he checks in here can provide more information, I believe. Thanks, I did not recall that... At that point, he should have had the center recast....I understand now, the comment made.....
I bought a set of Gotti 15" rims for the Dino off Ebay a year or so ago. NOS and $200 for the set. You can run a lower profile tire such as the Michelin TB15. I ordered a set of red Gotti center caps for around $50 and got them in 10 days or so. You can skip the rubber sealing ring and just use silicon red sealer on the mating surfaces. That is what I did on the Speedline wheels used on the Stratos and they have been holding air for over a year now. I think Corbani's rims had cracks that he had welded up. Probably OK for the street but for peace of mind new rims would be better. 15" Dino rims are J55B's.
Back in the 80's Gotti's were quite the popular aftermarket choice. I believe Etoile bought them out, but I'm not old enough to remember that. Wow, nice website. The J55's were totally rad choice! Here's a link to one of John Corbani's threads (Dino Saga 080525 in Corbani's Corner) about the damage to one of his Gottis. The posting describes the damage and his photos show where the damage was repaired. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199072&highlight=weld Mark
It must be the other way around, as I cannot find any support for my Etoiles.. (I'd like a fifth one, as the spare...) I don't know why he didn't just order a new backside rim???
Looking at the Gotti website, I am not sure that the particular wheels that John Corbani had are still in production - none of them seem to match up very well to his wheels. I'd sure like to know what the offsets were on John's wheels. Mark
You'll have to chase down the new Owner!!! If Gotti is still in business there's a chance the molds are still around or could be redone.....Napolis went to the effort of remoulding the Dino Competizione's wheels...let's just all run THOSE!!!! The set up costs are the big $$$... None match mine either, look how many fasteners are used, around my rims..... Image Unavailable, Please Login
