Bah, I put lines in with regular monotony all day, every day. The Cancer Care Centre is next door so you can imagine the level of difficulty in some, especially after the tech has had a go and buggered up their “good” vein

I went from public ED (where the doctors do their own IV's), to private ED (where the RN's do it) about 25 years ago. Having not done one for 6 months, the RN asks me to do one after she'd pranged all the usual sites. I figured you would have had flunkies do it for you for decades.

Yeah, the techs do most, but because of the type of patients I see, they’re often difficult and ask me to insert a line instead. It’s pretty critical it’s in as we pump about 100ml of contrast in at 5ml/sec. Extravasations can get very ugly. What I have found in recent times is that the new Radiologists we get on board baulk at putting an IV in. Seems these days the nurses in public hospitals do the majority of cannulations and the residents have very little experience. Don’t get me started on how poorly trained they are in other areas these days.....

Yep. Doctors are such pu55ies these days - afraid to do anything, and poorly trained. I've seen guys that have got their fellowship in surgery that I wouldn't let peel a carrot. Too many medical schools, and really another symptom of the crap direction that tertiary education has been taking for the last 20 years. Medicine is an apprenticeship, and there are not enough mentors to go around.

Hmmm, I thought medicine was Bout the last bastion of proper training due to the numbers being kept down by AMA restrictions? Has that changed?

PS I’ve got ZERO complaints about our medical system after Wednesday’s little adventure... ambo got aline in neatly first time (and no bruise now its out), ‘flying’ doctor diagnosed the injury correctly in the first aid room at the surfclub but sent me via ambulance to hospital for MRI to confirmand I was home at the end of the day.

The AMA has never had any influence over the number of doctors trained nor the number of medical school positions. No influence over specialist training positions either. In fact, very few doctors are members, probably in the order of 10%. I’m not. It’s pretty much an irrelevant organisation these days, the various colleges tend lobby directly with the government

That's interesting because I assumed as a doctor you had to belong to the AMA ... didn't know you could just be unorganised rabble like the rest of us .... welcome to the club :p

Are you kidding? I laughed my head off when I saw that advertised the other day.

First thing I thought was “What kind of f-wit would buy that?”, followed by

“I pity all the kids of helicopter parents who will be beaten up when they are sent to school wearing one...”

It's quite disgraceful that if your personal view is that you're against same sex marriage you are going to be ridiculed and cancelled.

Yep and a minister in a church following the readings of the Bible.

She should be welcomed not for her sexual partner believes but for the iconic champion she was in Tennis.

    Andrews is a flog ..
