It was called Advancetown Dam when it was built. I complained about the name change at the time (early seventies), and was told it was named after Russ Hinze's father

Need to detangle 2 separate issues Greg - quality of the registrants (which needs to be enforced) and need for foreigners to fill the positions outside of big cities because of the lack of locally trained staff who are willing to leave the big cities. Many of the regional places would have virtually no medical service if not for the foreign doctors.

Thanks, but I am acutely aware of those issues and have a wealth of experience in dealing with overseas trained Drs. We have had many through our doors as outer suburbs are declared "area of need", as basically they are **** holes and no one wants to go there, battle traffic etc. The quality is quite variable, some good, some incredibly bad and most meh. I can guarantee you that the good ones find employment easily, the bad ones end up as journeymen and general **** kickers picking up government agency work such as vaccine injectors. The bad ones from the subcontinent are particularly dangerous, they are all upper caste, arrogant narcissists with no real concern for patient care, just like Dr Patel that was let loose in QLD

So who is responsible for passing the ‘incredibly bad’ ones through the registration process?

    It's complicated :)

But basically, it's easy for these guys to slip through especially if they are in the public system....

How can they get into the public stem if they’re not registered? Surely it is the Medical Registration Board who should be responsible for ensuring the compliance? Of course there are always going to be some who slip through (can definitely think of one or two architects who got through registration who shouldn’t have) ...

No, they're registered. Passing exams etc doesn't mean you're not incompetent

There's an exam, about equivalent to a 6th year medicine exam. It has a high failure rate, but study hard enough and sit it enough times, and you'll get through. It doesn't mean you're a good doctor. It gets you registration, but not a provider number, so these guys work out in ****-holes, or work for exempted organisations (like the one in question)

What do you have to do to get a Provider number? BTW, I presume these loopholes apply equally to locally trained staff?
