Hi there, I just posted a thread in the Florida section stating that I am thinking about moving there, my other choice would be to move to the Corpus Christi area, or there abouts. I am wanting to open a restaurant in the area, so my main concern is the local economy and the weather (i.e. hurricanes etc.). Any thoughts on this?

Corpus is nice check the seawall they tore it all out for reno and lost the Offshore Boat Races......

Economy is based upon Naval Base and Aquarium with Columbus Boat replicas, not sure what tourism will support, in my mind it's more of a Hoilday Inn Exprees/Whataburger level of tourist, ya know???

South Padre has more big $$$ stuff going right now for a start up and Spring Break there goes off........

Both zones get hammered occaissionally no missing that anywhere on the Gulf Coast..

Consider Biloxi MS they have gambling boats to fund reconstruction and will recover first...

That's also where the Offshore Boats have gone to race! ;)

My uncle developed Pelican Cay there...the only highrise to with stand 27' storm 'surge' wave....

What are the demographics of the population, white, black, hispanic? Above or below average income? I though I read somewhere that the city is mostly a hispanic population, which may effect the concept I had in mind for my restaurant.

CC Olive garden is nationally ranked in the top 10 OG's in regard to gross sales. That might tell you a little bit about the demographic.

9/11 ruined it, but use to SCCA race the Naval Air Station there. Great fun! 7 hour haul from DFW though.

Definitely a tourist city, however, I see in a decline before I see its popularity escalate. Its nice, but somewhat old fashioned....Its a city that has an 80s feel to it, even today.

The first Boat show held this year in Corpus Christi had a tremendous success with manufacturers represented from all over the world. Sailing and Power Boat Racing also attracts an international crowd. Texas A& M has seen significant growth in the last few years but I would suggest you contact the Chambet of Commerce for detailed info and it would be wise to scout the area to make up your own mind.
Rockport, just 20 miles north of Corpus Christi, has a wealthy population and is the place to have a Beach House in Texas.
Unfortunately as Rob has mentioned there is no more racing at the old naval base airport after 911.

There hasn't been any boat racing in Corpus since Cormody stuffed it an d died....what are you talking about, brudda?

The promoter left when they demoed the waterfront and went to work for OPT....

I saw charlie Robison at the Concrete street that was cool but the margs were kinda sweet.......

Mostly white and hispanic. Id say average incomes. I run an upscale day spa and we do quite well. I have several friends in the restaurant business that have done well. I also have other that have failed miserably.

Feel free to check out these reports... http://www.ccredc.com/publications.asp
