Hi I wonder if some of the 328 experts might be able to clarify what type of accesorries came with an '86 328 GTS? I have two styles of the vinyl covers for the targa top. One with horsey black plastic toneau clips and one with traditional Tenax style. Which is correct? Or where both used in that period? I also have what looks like a vinyl bag as pictured to put the targa roof cover in. Was this a factory item? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Also I have two of the green bulb holders. One with Rotor on it and one without. The one without has the bridge for blade fuses so seems more likely to be the right one for the car. The toolkit is now correct as varified on the brilliant toolkit thread as well as the jack kit complete with triangle, Champion spark plugs, belts, emergency light etc. Thanks very much!
I believe the horse caps are simply press fit over the standard tenex release. It's factory; basically, you're missing some black caps.
Stonker, I have an '89 US 328 GTS that stayed in the family after the original owner passed. They stored it for an extended time and then put it up for sale. I'm pretty sure that they didn't change anything. The tonneau cover has the prancing horse on the buttons as you showed (see below). The green bulb holder in my car is actually grey and black with no logos. Could you please post a photo of the foam interior on that one? Mine originally had a foam interior, but it has crumbled over time. Sounds like we are both trying to get our cars back to their original condition. I'm wondering if different years had different items and/or cars built for different countries had different items as well. It would be great to delineate these items for all years of the GTS. Mike
I don't think the vinyl bag is for the targa roof cover. As it stands I've never seen one before. If it's small it could be for the emergency light, IIRC they had a snap on them though.
Cool thanks but it's too big for the emergency light and that has the correct vinyl cover with it. The roof cover does fit in it! Could be aftermarket as I've never seen on before either.
My 89's roof cover also has the horsey snaps. I don't have a cover bag and I've never seen any other 328 that had a bag like that.
Great thanks for the info Mike. Your car sound very original indeed! I have seen later 328 with the same grey bulb case. There's no foam in either of the green bulb holders. The inside is molded to hold the bulbs and fuses. . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Guys, the roof cover fits the top perfectly and, I believe, is meant to cover the roof when it's off and stored behind the seats. I guess that's obvious after re-reading my last sentence. I couldn't find a reference for the 328, but here's one for the 308: https://www.classicferrariparts.co.uk/shop/1976-85-ferrari-308-gts-targa-roof-cover/ Perhaps it was an option? Cheers!
I also have what I think is the factory radio blanking plate that the dealers would remove and fit whatever model of radio they had or customer ordered with their new car. I've been told the cars were never shipped with radios? It's really interesting researching these cars! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks! There were remnants of a black foam interior that surrounded the bulb holders and had slots for the fuses. I tried to remove it to copy and it disintegrated. Hmm... I may have a photo. I'll check.
Graham, No need for research here. The cars were shipped new from the factory with the speakers already in place in the doors (and the tweeters in the dash) and already wired for a head unit, but without it. The choice was offered to the buyer by the importer, who sometimes gave the head unit as a free extra gift (it was the case for most french cars delivered new by Pozzi, the historic importer, which had a long standing sponsoring deal in rallying with Pioneer, hence the Pioneer head units on most french Ferraris) Rgds
I just took some snapshots of my bulb/fuse unit. This is from a late-production US 89 car with a build month of March 1989. The foam has aged to a slightly pale yellow over the years but I an tell it was originally white. It is exactly 20mm thick. I removed the bulbs that were originally in there. They are the stock bulbs delivered with the car - types 67 (5W), 1073 (21W) and 1034 (5/21W). I'm not sure if the fuses are in their original positions but a concours expert might be able to tell us. That small bulb in the last picture is a 3W bulb, but I don't know why it's there because I believe all the 3W bulbs on the car are supposed to be tubular. great thanks very much for that info. My car has a modern Bluetooth head unit fitted but also came with the original Alpine radio/cassette unit in the trunk with paperwork and codes in the leather wallet. I’ll keep that as it was the original fitted by Maranello Sales UK who retailed the car to its first owner.
I think that green one might be for a RoW car, like Euro/Japan/Australia. The center bulb looks to be an H4 headlight bulb, which those cars may have been delivered with. All US cars came with sealed beam headlights so there would be no replacement headlight bulb supplied with them.
AHA! Thanks for the info. The foam in my US car looked the same except black and it had four slots for the fuses in the lower part of the foam. The sealed beam explains why there was no H4. I adjust the foam to show where the slots were. Great info, everyone! Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't know if that part was on the car when they left the factory but indeed they don't have radio on it at that time. The radio were fitted by the dealer or the importer
In refurbishing my 328, I knew that the radio was not a problem with evaluation at concourses as there was no radio, so I just updated mine with a 1 din Pioneer AVH-3500NEX. It has a pop-up touchscreen, Bluetooth, CarPlay, etc. I ran a wire from its USB port to the locking box in the rear of the console, and my iPhone fits there nicely. The pop-up screen retracts, and the system still works great. Just an FYI as an option.
No, the difference in bulb holders has nothing to do with the markets, it is only a matter of earlier /later cars; the green "rotor" bulb holder appeared earlier than the one you have, that's all. Green "Rotor" bulb holders came at the very beginning of the eighties and were still common on early 328s. (and even still seen from time to time on later cars, remember "Piezo's" (= Steven) "Unofficial 3x8 tool kit specification" quoted by "stonker" above (*) = as for accessories, there never was a clear cut at one precise day, with one variant substitued to the other: the factory still used "older" variants until the stock was expired) The "grey" one you have, with the twelve small "ridges", is the "later" variant, typical of the 328s, and found especially on almost all later production cars. Grey is by far the most common color, but other colors can be found from time to time as well: I have one with a yellow top. You deduction as for the H4 headlight bulbs versus sealed beam headlights for US cars is correct; but many US bulb holders had a spark plug in the central "cradle" instead. Rgds (*) this very forum about 308/328 is missing "Piezo" (Steven), by the way; no post for a long time from him, I hope it is not connect to the last "change of wind" in Hong-Kong?
Here’s a picture of the emergency light and vinyl bag. Also, here is a picture of the bulb holder showing the original foam padding. The foam padding was never white from the factory.
