I need a new battery for my 400i (#049773 - a late Series II). Unfortunately, a stupid PO replaced the original with an undersized replacement, and I now have no way to know what the correct make/model/size/model # would be for Interstate, NAPA, etc. common battery. Can anyone tell me what is correct or what they are using with good results? I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Yes, thank you.

Did it fit? Anyone know what the difference is or which is better, bigger, or more correct?

    Alex,

Yes, it fit perfectly. No idea if it's the 'correct' battery for the car but that was what came out of it, so I just followed suit. If anything, the 48 is a tad small, but not really noticeable.

    Cheers,

My battery just died today. At a gas station. Next to a NAPA shop. I went over there, and bought a new Group 34 replacement, and it started right up. Fit in perfectly. Get the highest CCA you can find. Mine was a 625, which was the highest they had.

For what it is worth, I actually wound up going with an Optima Red Top, figuring the benefits outweighed the cost, and (at least according to the guy in the store) it does 1200 CCA, far more than a traditional lead acid battery. It is significantly smaller than the "correct" standard battery, but it clamps down just fine and is perfectly stable using the factory mounting brackets. Just in case anyone is ever looking to know if it will work w/o mods or not - it will.

Found out why my battery was dead-BOTH alternators had died! They looked like the original Bosch, so they're both out for a rebuild now. I should have them both back in tomorrow!
