Hi guys, Apologize if this is an old question. (could find other oil checking method threads, but nothing specific to oil levels).

Just got back from a drive in the Gt4 (in between snowstorms while the roads were dry), checked the oil the commensurate few minutes after shutdown (as per the method that the FChat threads recommend). No issue, more of a validation of my post-drive checkout. Oil is right where I always run it...approx 1/4 inch below the max line while "hot".

I've always assumed not to run it up to the max level , as I have always done with my other cars, to avoid over fill. Can anyone confirm, or are these cars intended to be filled right to the Max line?

Thanks, and once again, apologies if this is a repeat thread. (pls no lectures on use of the search engine). :)

Keep the level @ or below the lower side of the diagonal, I believe the motor should rest a good 10-15 min. for draindown before check.

Edit: A little low is better than overfill.

I'll wait for others to comment, but I dont think thats right for the 308 series. I believe someone posted before that they regularly overfill by 1 quart when racing to cure the high-g cornering oil starvation.

Also, there should be several threads about oil level, timing of checking oil and I think even DStacy posted one with a procedure to mark the GT4's dipstick for correct oil level after an oil change.

Thanks for the thread reference, James. I've got the "over MAX" concept when cold due to the draining into the pan. My question is if you follow the guidance and check it while hot, where should it be? You need to know that reference point to avoid OVERFILL, since the AM reading will not tell you much.

I always see the oil level over max in the AM, but was just curious about what the level should be immediately after a drive. If its over the MAX fill line, I know there is an overfilled situation. Just wondering how much below the line on average for GT4 owners?

It should be inbetween the Min and Max markings when hot...

It is common to over fill by up to a quart for tracking, as the cars can lose oil pressure in high G turns. This is not an issue in most street driving situations. I would not worry about it much. Though I always kept my 308 and later my 328 right at the max line.
