My testarossa was originally delivered in 1985 with a dealer-installed Kenwood CD player. The car was designed to take a tape player, evidenced by the cassette storage rack in the console. The Kenwood is acting sick after 27 years, and I would like to install a period-correct cassette player and use my old cassette tapes (the music is period-correct also) that fit in the storage rack. My mechanic says that these cars left the factory with no radio but that the standard dealer installation was a Blaupunkt unit named after a city. This practice meant that the factory did not have to worry about tailoring a car to the country to which it was shipped. What Blaupunkt tape unit was being installed in 1985? Probably it was the same unit as in the 328's also.

All Ferraris of that period left the factory without stereo. They were only pre-wired for them and there was no "standard/preferred" stereo. The dealerships installed whatever the owner brought to them, that's what I was told and did right before I took delivery of my car. But if you really want to be "period correct", the factory brochure does show a stereo but IIRC, that was only for reference only. The photo is too small for me to make out what manufacture it is from, but it does resemble more to the Pioneer brand back in those days than the Blaupunkt units.

In addition, I would think it may be more expensive to find a working unit from that period than finding something that are currently on the market right now.

I have the USA-4 In Dash AM/FM/CD MP3 on my Porsche spyder replica... and works great.

On the TR I have an Alpine/ cd player... Since there was no factory installed... you are free to get whatever looks correct. Plus you can find bluetooth looking period correct.

I agree Bluapunkt was "it" for a long time in Ferrari, but about time time of the TR, it seems to me they partnered with Alpine, for an extensive ad campaign????

I don't think Alpine was associate with Ferrari at all. IIRC, Alpine was the Lamborghini brand and not Ferrari. And Blaupunkt was the brand for all German cars including Porsches. Either way, no one was factory linked to Ferrari at that time.

For what it's worth, I have the original sale ad (from Ferrari Market Letter) of my 1990 TR and it stated "equipped with a Blaupunkt CD radio".

When I bought it, it had an Alpine CD radio (still does), so it's been changed since obviously. Every time I see a 1990 TR for sale I take a look to see if there is a period correct Blaupunkt in it, and I did see a few with "Blaupunkt Miami" head units.

So my guess would be the Blaupunkt Miami for the later TRs, but it's just a guess, and since they did no come out of the factory with anything, it probbly doesn't really matter!

Clarion here of the 86 from the dealer.

    Alpine was lambo.

The Testarossa got clarion or blaupunkt.

Our Testarossa has an original Blaupunkt unit with cassette rack, the same radio is shown in the sale brochure. Don't know which Blaupunkt unit but I have the original Blaupunkt instructions, so If anyone is interested I could take a look after - anyway I never used the radio ...

I'm sorry but it will take 2 or 3 days, I'm not in Munich at the moment ... but I will look after! Should I also take some pictures of the radio?

Our late 1988 TR came with the Blaupunkt Washington SQR 47 AM/FM Cassette. The previous owner replaced it with an Eclipse unit, which looks a little cheesey in the car, especially when the graphic equalizer is selected. The Blaupunkt is much classier and high tech looking.

We still have the Blaupunkt Owner's Manual and a fold-out brochure of their product line up in 1988. Their other cassette receivers were named Lexington, Seattle, Aspen, Portland and Denver.

    Hope this helps.

Today I had a look at our car and the radio instructions.

Our '89 Testarossa (Suisse version) has a Blaupunkt Nashville SQR 48 Radio.
I'm quite sure it's the original one, looks like the one in the sale brochure.

My 89 testarossa has an Alpine CD player which I suppose may be original but I would prefer a cassette version as I have some old eighties tapes in the storage armrest area that I would like to use, including the Miami vice soundtrack .. very sad I know. Any current suggestions on which model?
