After seeing the Florida car popping up for sale in my backyard: http://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/galleria_images/1531/1531_p67_l.jpg I'm wondering... how many places are the aluminum skins touching down on steel? Did Ferrari install a sacrificial anode on the Testarossa? I've seen other posts with applying an oil based protection in the sill cavities. But how about for the rest of the car?
Hi Jeff, it has all to do with preventive maintenance; the Italians never cared about rust prevention so YOU must ! I posted a thread about that a long time ago .... but I wonder how many know ... And fellow Robert posted this thread about rusted sills , exactly what you mentionned. Tell us your story now please !
I remember seeing the first link. Great write up on the seldom seen, but required, maintenance. The second link is the scary one! My story... this summer I'll be back in the market for an early Testarossa. I had a sale fall through before my wedding last year. After a wedding your mind goes elsewhere. My window is about to come up again (about to finish my house restoration) then we are looking for my car --again. I'm truly passionate about these cars and I will not let go of mine --ever. I want to minimize the damage that is out of my control.
Buy a TR that has spent it's life in the western part of the USA. Arizona to California. You will not find any corrosion issues when compared to cars east of the Mississippi. Mine came from Arizona. Zero rust or corrosion that I can find. Be sure to run CARFAX or equivalent, I found many east coast cars transplanted to the west coast and it showed in comparison to "native" cars. I have shopped FLA for numerous cars and all had corrosion issues. It's the environment. Go west young man.
Thanks Spasso, We were looking forward to driving across the country but a healthy car is more important than the trip.
