so, can anyone say what the dealers actually pay to get them to the showroom floor?

Volume prestige dealers (BMW/MB) are on 12% plus they get further discounts and bonuses etc.

I'd guess that it would be about the same, but I know for a fact the MB/BMW number is right. Ducati was only 10% a few years back, for example, when we had a bit of an exchange rate crunch in 2003, but rebounded to almost 20% when the Aussie was much stronger in 2004. No Fing Idea (NF Importers), the local Ductati distributor used to set the retail pricing in advance for the product in Aussie dollars, then seemed to charge the dealer based on what it pays in Euro. (no currency hedging).

yeah, stupid car dealers are very tight lipped about this in Aus.

I wish it was like the US, where you can get all of the wholesale costs of cars, and can haggle based on that :)

From what I understand, actual cost of Ferrari stock holding is a little more complicated than pure cost....

Apparently, dealers can only buy "X" amount of V8's if they buy a proportional amount of V12's.... hence the problem with unsold slow moving stock of such cars.

And thats just one factor I'm aware of.

i guess there are other issues involved with this sort of dealership, as maybee they can sell their entire allotment of V8's, but most of these dealers also have a great deal of used stock, which of course costs you money (unless every car is on consignment, and then the costs are purely floorspace, which is a totally seperate issue), and the interest payments on cars which dont turn over quickly would be prety high.

Id rather be running a hyundai Dealership where for $400k, i have 40 used Accidents which turn over quickly to keep your cash flowing, rather than just 1 Murci sitting there for months costing you interest and stuff.

i think thats why it seems alot of high end car related businesses dont always stick around.

The costs of running a stealership have nothing to do with the gross sales margins on new stock. Thankfully for new car dealers, there is a fortune to be made out of the respective service departments. New car sales are just a way of getting a customer for the service department for many dealers.

ok, that i can believe, but see last night i was surfing yank exotic places and the prices were astounding... i saw an '06 gallardo for $175kUS, and even with the most conservative estimates on exchange and whatnot, there's still AT LEAST a $100k AUD defecit that goes between the cars for the most part unexplained. sure LCT and stamp etc but jeez, there's still a lot of slack just for being on a different island... surely delivery across a different ocean doesn't cost $50-100k per car.

now that sort of thing opens my eyes a bit, i've always been of the mind that i'll stick around oz to set myself up, then travel the planet where my career/life takes me, but if i can get into a car of that calibre that much sooner it's itching the back of my head saying i may as well go and play where the things i love are easier to get.
