How much should it cost to do a quality paint job on a Testarossa? I have mine in the bodyshop now having the the front lower spoiler and front bumper being painted and a few other touch-ups and I'm thinking about having the whole dam thing painted! The car looks pretty darn good but I'm a picky bastard. I know there is this stigma about cars that have had "no paint work", but I would rather have a car that's absolutely perfect thats been painted than one "original" with imperfections.

I agree - it's your car. If you can afford it do the whole thing for your own
satisfaction. I know I would. I'll be it will be a LOT - in the range of $15k
for a quality job. But if you can, I'd say do it.

    Dear Ferraristi,

A painted car really does carry a stigma.

Why not paint what you're doing but have the car polished by a professional detailer. There are a few on the board with posted pix....results are amazing.

    IMHO:
I've lived through two Ferrari completes. The problem I see and most likely the stigma around keeping orig paintwork is how it ages. I had one painted in orig laquer 22 years ago. It has spent 90% of it's life under a cover and has areas where the paint now shows shrinkage, and checking, another car was done in Glasurit ~12 years ago and has been cared for the same way (garaged & under a cover), and it is showing defects now The look of brand new paint is fantastic, but I've not had good luck with the long term part. Does original paint go bad in the same fashion? I don't know. I'm debating on another car that has been patch painted over the years and thinking how nice a total could be but I'm trying to hang on to the orig paint now, see what happens and save the money.

As for $$$ amounts, there was a Road and Track article from years ago that mentioned IIRC $64,000 for this stunning paint job done by a hi end So CA place. Maybe that paint job wouldn't have ageing problems. Best of luck

I'm leaning towards doing the whole car. The single stage paint Ferrari used back then is inferior to the new base coat/ clear coat systems now used. I'm going to get a price and see if I can justify it.

I had a Diablo painted to a different color, and that was $10K for a very very good job. I would say the same for the TR, but it depends on who you ask. There are shops that will charge you based on the car they see and some that want to do it and charge an honest figure. Find a painter that has a passion for doing it.

Greetings.. believe it or not the laquer that was used years ago is probably better than the current two stage base coat clear coat (to a degree). Single stage was not productive and was difficult to obtain a very nice lustre like the factory when spraying individual panels vs. the entire car if you were not really familiar with the product and process. Many painters had it down to a science. It was also difficult to blend and hard as hell to block sand and polish so variances were evident. Painters today do not prefer to spray single stage because they are always spraying two stage with good results.. I like the fact of having a second application of clear for shine and lustre. Don't get obsessed with how many coats of clear should be used. There are some folks out there that push the shop to apply extra coats of clear when it is not necessary. Two passes and your done (maybe three but I doubt it). A quality paint job in same color should cost you around 6-8 grand for the panels to be scuffed, repaired where needed, de-trimmed and preped for refinish. Maybe a tad more of you want to remove all the existing materials from the panels and start fresh.. I would prefer to take the paint down to the existing primer because the primer they used was good and bonded well to the panels. Find a clean shop that uses a good paint system (I prefer Glasurit) and shy away from a shop that just converted to waterborne paint. We don't know how this paint is going to be in the long term. They say no issues but I would like to see for myself and its fairly new to everyone so stick with the norm. Some shops are having a hard time getting the waterborne base coat to properly dry prior to spraying the clear. That could be a big problem. The clear coat is key. Some guys use a off brand clear because its cheaper and dries quicker. NO GOOD... If they spray glasurit insist on the clear and reducer to be glasurit as wel.. Spies Hecker is also very good paint along with Sikkens... PPG Global is good and is currently sprayed at the Ferrari factory. I like Glasurit. They have a nice scratch resistant clear (cost a tad more) that works very well.. Good luck and if you need a mock estimate written I would be more than glad to mock one up for you so you can use as some sort of guide.

    Be well

Hopefully Portogts will chime in since he is in the final stages of a complete on his TR. I would imagine though that being in Portugal the prices may be a little different but none the less it would be interesting to see what his repaint cost him.
I'm in the process of having the front of mine redone. I chose not to do the whole car since the majority of it is original and in great shape but had no choice but to fix some fading and cracking in the clear coat up front.
