    I live in Dallas and have never flown before. What would be the cost and time commitment to get a pilot's liscense so that I can fly from Dallas to college station.

    Also, how much does it cost to fly roundtrip Dallas /College Station with your licsense?

    Wow! That's a tall order....
    Let's see....

    The FAA (Gov't) requires at the very minimum, 40 hours of in the air flight training, plus what ever time you need for ground school. You'll also need a 3rd class medical certificate/student pilot license, and be able to pass a flight physical.


    Cost can be anywhere from 4-5 thousand, up to about nine or ten thousand dollars, depending on how well you absorb the material and gain skills, for Basic Flight Training. ( Including ground school...)
    At $80/per hr that's $3200.00 just for the required time in plane....
    and Instr will cost on avg about $30-35.00/hr. that's another $1200.00-$1400.00

    There's no magic number of hours that fits all. Each person will take the time that is needed to complete the training tasks.
    Most people I know got their license after some 100 hours in the air.
    (After Solo, you can fly (with some limitations) without the Instr, and save some money.


    As far as time committment, you can go to an accelerated course, and be done in about three weeks. ( that's with written and practical tests)

    This is intensive flight training, and ground schooling every day.
    But you may get a bunch of instr's.

    You can also spread out the cost, and fly.... say once per week, and it can take you two, maybe more... years...
    As I said "everyone learns at a different rate".

    Fly as much, as you can afford, and you'll learn the fastest. Training, if spaced apart, will have to be re-taught, and re-practiced, because you will have forgotten the skill, and coordination needed. (that's true for everyone...)

    Now for your planned flight.....
    (in clear weather, at the departure airport, along the flight path, and at the destination)

    College station (CLL) [ the 3 digit airport ID] is approx 150 miles SSE of Dallas/ft Worth (DFW)
    In a Cessna 150, (a small 2 seat aircraft), that should take anywhere from 2 hours....with no winds, to five hours in a strong headwind. (one way)

    You can't fly in all weather conditions, unless you pass yet another course on Instrument flying. (More $$$, figure another Thou.... or so, as this is no longer considered basic flight training and instructor rates increase.)

    You can't fly in a faster plane (high powered, multi engined, or a jet) without yet even more $$$ training.

    And no, you can't charge other people to fly them..
    Or get paid for the flight, in any way shape or form.

    That takes a commercial license ........More $$$ Still...!


    Costs to fly DFW to CLL?

    Plane rental.... $80 - $125 per hour (usually the lower, but it can go higher...)

    Will you turn right around and go home?
    If not.. consider .....
    landing fees, parking fees, extra hours for the plane rental....

    the fine print..... ;)


    Renters Insurance
    $ ?? How much coverage do you need? You can get insurance from a number of sources like AOPA.com. You'll definitely want Hull insurance and Liability Insurance. They are separate items, priced accordingly to the amount of coverage, and are for one years time.

    Fuel
    approx. Expect just under 7 GPH at 75% cruise.
    this is a conservative estimate. You may only burn 6 1/2.
    So 7 gph at $3.50 gal for 100LL comes to $24.50/ hour
    (your mileage may vary)

    Those are the "BASICS". There's more to flying than just going there...
    but you don't need to know all that, yet.

    you make it sound like an expensive hobby ;)

    But yeah, that sounds about right...I'm 43 hours into earning my private...and I've spent just over $7,000 so far.

    The fuel is a lot of the cost...figure a plane burns...conservatively 10 gal/hr....at 3.98/gal where I am anyways...it adds up.

    I live near Addison KADS, and I got my ticket in late June after 6 mo and 48 hours total. With the crap I had to buy, and $122/hr for a nice 2003 172 with GPS/autopilot/etc. (Monarch Air) it ran me about $8500. DO NOT START flight training in the summer. It will suck.

    I started right before new years and solo'd in 35 degree wx. Flying in the 110 degree heat is totally different, and much more difficult, especially with a 200+lb CFI in the plane.

    Monarch's planes may be expensive, but they're almost new and well maintained.
