I'm looking at purchasing a 308, but I want to make sure everything checks out with the car first. The VIN# is F106AS24251.

It's a really good price, but the car is in California and the seller is in Tuscon Arizona. I'm just a little nervous about doing an internet deal!!

    Thanks for your help!

    Don

that is not a VIN number, that is the chassis/car number. I do not believe that old 308 wear VIN numbers.

If you got the VIN number I can run a carfax for you,

    Ricky

Don... Since the car is a pre-1980 car (S/N 24251 was made in April, 1978), there is no VIN on the car... "F106AS" is the chassis type for the 308 GTS... The serial number of the car is the last five digits, 24251...

The Ferrari Market Letter doesn't have much info on this car aside from the fact that it was sold new from Chinetti Motors. The car is red. It was also seen at Chinetti's in April, 1979 while it was there for service. At the time it was seen, the engine was out of the car.

Before purchasing any Ferrari, always get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection)...

Thanks guys for your help!! I'll see if I can get a valid VIN# and we can try this again!

I just want to make sure my bases are covered before I make a move on this car.

I am a current porsche owner (I know, I know!) who has always dreamed of owning a ferrari. I am pretty good with a wrench and am not afraid to open anything!!

I am incredibly nervous about buying an f-car online though, but living in Tulsa, Oklahoma there aren't many f-cars to look at in person! The guy says that he will ship car to me for inspection and that if PPI doesn't pass or I am not pleased with the vehicle that he will pay return shipping and refund deposit. (sounds fishy)

You're not understanding. Back then, the long carfax-acceptable VIN wasn't required. The serial number of that car is 24251, that's all there is :)

Tulsa's not that far from the Metromess, you should wander down some long weekend and check out Boardwalk Ferrari and Lamborghini Dallas.

As a matter of fact, there's a car show at Boardwalk on the 3rd

Don, Tillman's right... There is no VIN on pre-1980 cars because the VIN wasn't invented until 1980... The car you're looking at doesn't have a VIN - never did, never will... The serial number is all there is...

Correct... And even *if* there were, a Carfax is hardly worth the effort on a Ferrari. There are many ways around one in the car repair business, and the previously-mentioned PPI is what really counts. Where in California is the car?

It never ceases to amaze me how many don't have $30.00 to spend to get a carfax and feel there is nothing wrong with "stealing" one through another!

Get a life folks and realize the legal liability involved in doing this. It's theft of copyrighted material!

If you can afford the car, you can afford a carfax subscription!

No kidding. And how is it difficult today to find a good 308 with the owner standing right there with the title?

Carfax sucks, my old S2K was wrecked 3 times and carfax still shows it has a clean record. Insurance was involved in all 3 wrecks also. PPI PPI PPI. Carfax is extra insurance but don't think the car is great just because it has a clean Carfax record.

Also just an FYI for anyone that runs carfax for people, if carfax finds out and believe me they do monitor a large # of online forums, carfax will charge you for each individual carfax that they can prove you ran for other people. I learned the hardway thinking I was doing a favor for people and ended up with hundreds of dollars in charges.

If somebody is serous about buying a Ferrari they should be able to run a carfax. If somebody is serious about selling a Ferrari they should be able to provide a carfax. There's no reason a 3rd party should be involved.
