The worlds most popular car the 911, longest production run and there is only one prototype left. Could this be the worlds most valuable Porsche? The 901

It certainly is an important Porsche, but I don't think it is the most valuable. A visit to the Porsche museum may help sort out what's most valuable from a historical perspective. From a pure financial value perspective, I still think other Porsches (if available for sale) may bring more money.

GM built a twin rotor Corvette prototype with Pininfarina crafted coachwork
but then it sort of disappeared from public view
because blabbermouth Duntov admitted to a reporter it was built on a Porsche 914/6 chassis. GM kicked it out of its family tree once it became known GM had spent $2 million customizing a Porsche

    That's actually amusing.

Imagine Porsche releasing a car which really was just a Corvette beneath

Well the Porsche museum has been trying to buy this car from my friend for many years, so the most valuable Porsche may not be in a Museum. This car looks like a 911 but all the windows and panels are a different size. it's the only 901 left in the world

Most valuable early 911 variant: yes
    Most valuable Porsche: no
You'd have to think Porsche #1 would hold that title forever.

If James Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder is ever found, and restored, THAT will be the most-valuable.

Actually, what I was trying to convey is that there are other Porsches (at least IMHO) more valuable than this 901. Furthermore, I meant that perhaps visiting the Museum and seeing and comparing other important Porsches such as at the museum may shed more light and provide a big picture perspective of the important cars. To be clear, I'm not saying that the most valuable one is in the museum. Lastly, there's a healthy level of subjectivity in this topic.

I think the mid-engined #1 is indeed more historically important than the 911 prototype. There are also certain race cars that I would personally put ahead of the 911 proto.

As to what I consider the most valuable, I'd have to take the time to think about it. It's not something that I've really given much thought.

If it's ever found and not restored, it might still be the most valuable.

But, the engine and transaxle have been installed in other 550s, so it would require a lot of heavy check-writing to pull it off.

If I had to go back in time and pick between a brand new 78 928 and a 78 Vette. The stipulation being I had to drive, maintain and put on a 100000 miles in 2013. Then sell it.

I'd take the Vette in a heartbeat.

The maintenance cost on the 928 would far exceed that of the Vette over a 100000 miles. The original purchase price in of the 928 was 2 1/2 times what the Vette was. And, today a 100000 mile Vette is worth more than a 100000 mile 928.

You place no value on the driving experience during that 100k miles?

In 78 the 928 was the best GT on the planet.
You go and enjoy that plastic car ;)

Sure I place value on driving, all things being equal I would take the Porsche without question.
In 1978, I would take the Porsche....but in 2013, I would not. I'm not saying the Vette is better than the Porsche either, I was just giving an example.

Before this thread gets off topic...no I don't think the 911 above is the most valuable Porsche. How much of a premium would someone place on that car over and above a similar 911 without the pedigree? 50%, 100%, 200%??

While the 901 is interesting,... and no doubt very desirable to a collector,... it wouldn't even be in my top 10 desirable porsches.

Not meant to be disrespectful to the car or it's owner. It's just not my thing...

I would think the 917 that won Le Mans (023) would be the most valuable.

917-30 would do it for me. Next, a Gulf 917, a 911R, RSR, RSK...the 901, while significant, doesn't interest me as much.
