Hi John, glad it's going well with your new QV. Will look forward to seeing you at the Countach Lunch day in September. But if calendars allow, lets try and meet up prior to. I'll drop you a mail with dates. Cheers Rob
Thanks John. At the time we thought nothing of it, but now looking back, the 80s were very special times! Besides these great cars, that decade gave us a lot of excitement! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Agreed. The F40 seems to be the car most people compare with the Downdraft, but I think the more relevant comparison is the 288 GTO, not least because it was also FIA Homologated (B-273 for the GTO and B-291 for the Downdraft) but shares a parallel story of aborted competition plans, a story of what could have been. I aim to do a published piece on this story in Octane magazine in the not-too-distant future. Image Unavailable, Please Login
For me, if there is one image that symbolizes Lamborghini in the 80s, this is it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bianco/Rosso Downdraft with 17,985 miles (28,944 km) available for $ 680,625 in Dubai 1985 Lamborghini Countach, United Arab Emirates - JamesEdition said to have full service history - no affiliation.
It also helps having the right people undertaking the work like the guy doing the amazing job on your car Joe. Can't wait to see that gorgeous color in the the sun! Geno
Wife and I took the DD out to breakfast this morning and the DD had company in the parking lot. He just picked up his convertible Huracan a couple weeks ago. Beautiful car!! The owner of the Huracan was admiring the DD. Both are white/black. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Scott, Your DD looks great! I have been meaning to draw your attention to some research I did about the late famous first owner of your DD. Here is a piece from 1986 when Gary had just purchased the Countach, it says, "his toys include a new Lamborghini Countach" https://programmersatwork.wordpress.com/gary-kildall-1986/ Here is another interesting article titled "The Man who could have been Bill Gates" The Man Who Could Have Been Bill Gates - Bloomberg I'm not sure if he kept the Countach at his West Lake Hills, Austin house or at the Pebble Beach mansion (with panoramic ocean view). Kildall owned and flew his own Learjet between the two places. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you Geno. As an independent consultant I'm happy to offer my services privately to anyone in the community contemplating a full restoration of a classic Lamborghini on a consultancy basis, to guide & advise so that they avoid all the mistakes, headaches and disappointments that the restoration process often brings. It should be an enjoyable process where you feel the restorer has your best interests, it should happen within the time & amounts agreed at the onset, it should be one that results in a great finished product, and most importantly, it should result in a car that works like it should. This takes thoughtful planning, and, as you say, working with the right people.
I was always facinated by Gary. I cut my teeth on computers using CP/M-86 on 8" floppy disks! Yeah, I'm dating myself. Robert Cringley did a good piece on him in "Triumph of the Nerds" series on PBS. Amazing how he was so close to being what Bill Gates is now. One has to wonder what might have happened had his wife ignored the advice of their attorney and signed the NDA with IBM....... Never knew he had a Countach! Mike
I went on a road trip to drool over this baby! Guy sold his share of a business in Europe and put $10 million in a warehouse and $80m into cars. With 2 Countachs, 2 Miuras, 2 Diablos, 2 Gallardos, 1 Murcielago, La ferrari, F40, F50, Enzo and 520 other cars for show in the Gosford Museum. I literally ran to the Countach, and after an hour looked around briefly at all the other cars, then came back to look at the CT for couple of more hours.. Argh! I just want one! Your knowledge is extensive and always amazses me Joe! you know each car by VIN#! apparently the new owner ( Tony) has 3 CTs, the two you see above and one more at home, Not sure what model though.. I wonder if you know where my dads Countach is now, it's an LP500s black on black, I have posted images of it before and someone said it must've been from Milan due to the letter on the side of the license plate. He bought it in Italy in person in 1983. Sold it 1985~ in Lebanon due to the Civil war and inflation. it certainly left the country, could have gone 2 places, France/Europe or Middle east.
Truth is I only know fraction of the cars, but I'll tell you one thing, this thread has caused many more to be identified, and more to come.
