How often should the major service be done on these cars?
Both in miles and in years.

    thanks ken...

and please correct me if i am wrong, but isn't a major service where the engine is removed and the top end / valve adjustment done?
Also, is the clutch checked at this time?

You don't have to remove engine to do the valves.
According to Valentino, valves are good for quite some mileage before check/adjustment is needed.
Check both the manual timing tensioners.
A major would include ALL fluids. Don't forget the clutch fluid.
Check internals of clutch slave cylinder for corrosion, or just replace it for piece of mind.
Air filters, oil filter, fuel filters, spark plugs.
    Check AC.
Open distributor and check for any wear or corrosion.

Also a good idea to drive the car and put some miles on it as the best way of maintaining it!
A good dose of 'pedal to the metal' driving and jumping on brakes will keep it all working nicely!

If they start to go 'off' a bit then if a long good thrashing doesnt work it could be valve clearances. They can be done with engine in the car but is a tough job. Otherwise solid old lumps designed to be seriously abused! Just do it!

They shouldnt use much oil although they do kill spark plugs quite easily.

As most dont do many miles I wouldnt get too concerned about service intervals.

I appreciate my views wont find favour on this forum! lol

No, you don't have to pull the motor unless goes really wrong or changing the clutch.
(honestly, learning a lot after owning one of these, pulling the motor is not a big job anyway)

The manuals have a lot of info in them.... some points you might find interesting:

    Fuel Filter R=replace at 48 and 84,000km

    Air Filter R=replace 24, 48, and 72,000km

Fuel Injection I= inspect at 2 and 48 and 96,000km
    connections/lines

    Ignition wires I=inspect at 2 and 48 and 84,000km

    spark plugs R=replace every 12,000km

valve clearance I=inspect and adjust if needed at 24, then 48 and 72,000km

camshaft chains I= inspect at 2 and then every 24,000km

    belts I=inspect every 24,000km

engine oil and filter at least once a year or every 5,000km

Oddly, looking at both the Euro and American manuals, some of the details are different

ie. spark plugs in the euro manual says "clean" them every 5,000km and replace them every 10,000km.

The bell housing has a clutch inspection hole so between looking through it and driving the
car it is more than simple to tell if the clutch is worn out.
