I think it's meant to be a copy of Verde Abete, this car is in a non-original livery. Yes, in accordance with that, I don't believe any Downdraft was made in green. Agreed. There are 2 types of factory air-box for the Downdraft, the European version most cars have, and the sand-proof version made for the Middle East. This one is neither of those, perhaps Joe Nastasi made up a non-factory experimental item for some the cars he brought in to the USA, to Raymond's point, this one looks very, er, shall we say, home-made.
This is the middle east and California version, it was used in Cali too because of the vapor emission test. http://www.lambocars.com/images/countach/all/lp500qv35.html
My understanding from what I was told is this air box was built by Joe Nastasi on the handful of DD's he was able to get federalized. The original factory airbox that came on the DD would not pass emissions so Nastasi made these air boxes out of aluminum. The original air box was considered a fire hazard. I actually found the original paperwork on the emission test report and it states "SEALED CARB CAT CONV EVAP CAN".
I think that was the successor of the official factory version - which is btw also in the part manual.
I saw a champagne Countach sometime in the late 80s in Boca Raton. I wonder if this was the same car. Even then it was a very strange color choice.
I think this has another Background, EPA/DOT tests included vaporization tests when the engine was shut down over a certain time, that was also the reason why US Jalpas had the alu housing around the carbs. The inlets opened only under low pressure, means engine off - everything closed no fuel vapor could escape.
Speaking of LP500S, congratulations to our gentleman client who has just acquired Mario Andretti's first Lamborghini.
I want to say Joe Nastasi told me this years ago. I also heard it from others that are very big Countach lovers.
Understood. I know Joe quite well having done some business with him, rest assured in reality it wasn't a fire hazard at all, the latter simply the given excuse for it's replacement, that said, I can think of other things such as the catalytic converters on the USA EPA/DOT cars that were in fact a fire hazard.
Thank you! And to reply to your question: the color is named "Panna" (meaning cream) and it is the only one ever made in this shade! #FLA12842 was oredered triple-panna (exterior, interior and wheels) by Portman dealer in the UK and completed in July 1985. However, the car was not made to UK-spec, so I believe it was for some Middle-Easter Royal or something... I'll ask Derek Hopkins if he remembers it. Last but not least, 2 other Countach (LP400 #1120036 & #1120266) were the only Countach painted "Champagne" and both had a "Senape" interior. Looking quite similar to #FLA12842 but different indeed (both exterior paint and interior leather). #1120036 Image Unavailable, Please Login #1120266 Image Unavailable, Please Login #FLA12842 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you very much for that info!! FLA12842 was in the USA since new I believe. The gentleman that I got the car from if I remember correctly was the original owner. I will check the paperwork I have. So in that picture with all the countach’s, the Panna countach is FLA12842?? Thank you again for this info. Very interesting.
Sometimes Portman took orders for cars to be shipped out to the USA (or anywhere else). I'd be curious to know who was the original owner. Plese let us know! The one in Japan, well, I'm not sure. Everything is possible there. I'll ask some Japanese friends....
I have a copy of the title whom I got FLA12842 from and it is dated 2/27/86. I’m assuming he was the original owner. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice! Thanks! All I can say from my side is that FLA12842 was consigned July 10th 1985, to Portman Lamborghini dealer in the UK. What happened during those 7 and a half months in between is still a mystery...
FLA12840 is my DD that I have owned for over 10 years. Would you have any info on this Countach? build date, where it was delivered first, etc? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
FLA12840 was completed in May 1985 (consignment date is May 15th 1985), and was ordered by Vintage Automobiles dealer in Monaco. Bianco exterior with Nero interior and standard color wheels. No information about the rear wing, the factory archives don't say anything about wings usually. I didn't find the name of Gary Kildall in the archives, but it is rare to find the owner's name when a car is ordered by a dealer anyway. However, I can tell Kildall went to Monaco to enjoy racing events during his holidays, so he knew the place!
