I always look at the interior of a Countach very carefully, it speaks to you if you know what to look for, the condition of the ashtray which is covered with surface corrosion tells the story.
at least factory information says also HLA12166 1987 Bianco Perlato Bianco Prod. #1079 to Joe Nastasi, NY, USA on 22 Jun 87. Perhaps they changed the mind and the factory repainted it before delivery, would not be the first and only time.
I am pretty sure this is blu tahiti and nobody would touch up bianco perlato with blu metallic paint colour. Also in terms of the paint quality and how it was masked, it looks like a quick and dirty repaint by factory. These are just my 2 cents...
Can only support this, I saw many new cars in the swiss dealerships, not a single one was looking that badly messed up and was claimed to be as original as possible.
Upon closer examination you could be right, perhaps it was repainted upon arrival in the USA, that happened too.
Probably not. Mecum has some kind of filter, or maybe it's just tv, on their cameras. I've been to several Mecum auctions & seen some really terrible cars that looked mint on the screen. The beauty of an auction for selling is someone has to make a decision fast with little or no info. Add in ego & it's easy to over pay. Not really the best environment for a buyer.
It depends what kind of auction. The online auction business has leveled the playing field with prolific information via detailed images and history allowing Buyers to make informed decisions, that's why they are so successful, it works for us https://www.sackeyandco.com/results because Buyers can rely in the fact that we focus on quality cars and and such the results are typically benchmark numbers. FWIW we have some amazing cars coming up, including a spectacular Countach, or two never publicly sold before. There's a piece in the New York Times this week about online auctions which mentions us https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/17/business/classic-car-auctions-online.html some of the our sales numbers quoted are a bit off, nevertheless the piece does underscore the fact that Buyers are patronizing online auctions and bidding with confidence especially when great cars are thoroughly & transparently presented. If your'e not a New York Times subscriber, my son posted excerpts of the article here https://www.instagram.com/p/CY6_Ls9PkqE/ IMO it all comes down to providing quality cars properly described and then Buyer's interests are well-served.
Some the problems with online auctions, beyond the condition or description of the car, is the bidders themselves. Can't tell you how many I've seen where the bidder flaked out after winning, a seller was actually bidding on their own car. Someone drunk bidding against you just for fun. Even the auction companies like BJ and Mecum play with the bidders, acting like they have a legit bid when they don't. Plenty of stories. I've sold online for decades. Gone to auctions since a kid. Auctions favor the sellers. I have not looked at your site. Does your auction allow discussion of the cars?
Check out our site then: https://www.sackeyandco.com/details/2003-ferrari-enzo https://www.sackeyandco.com/details/1967-lamborghini-miura-p400 No flaky bidders, it's all in the registration process wherein they are prequalified, and knowing / getting to know your customers, we know who is bidding. No bidding by the house whatsoever. Since we are dealing with exclusively with million-dollar plus Supercars, no counter-productive and unnecessary discussion by non-participating interests, the discussions that occur are between us, Sellers & Buyers. Not all auction companies are the same, some online auctions have evolved from the old model with outmoded and in some cases unacceptable practices, we like to think ours is an environment that represents the interests both Buyers & Sellers, equally.
This extraordinary Countach LP400 periscopa was ordered and supplied new in December 1976 as a birthday present for Princess Dalal Alsaud of Saudi Arabia from her then husband and to her favorite color scheme! This car was also shown at the Pebble Beach Concours in August 2021. This car is for sale by www.mmgarage.com Great pictures & info, check it out. Nice LP400 but the white accents are not factory, 1120238 left Sant Agata like this, just like Kidston's car. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
FWIW Victor Debon LP400 specialist identified those 2 images as '0238' and posted them as such in his thread dedicated to that variant, of interesting note is the fact that 0248 also received similarly garish white accents soon after it was delivered, apparently paint-modifying with accents was a thing in the mid-to-late 70s
