From experience, I would say that leaving the flares on is almost a must due to the nature of that joint - the flares are very flexible and have some 'give' when installed and torqued down, as does the quarter panel itself. (fender area is somewhat stiffer but still subject to some deformation). It risks cracking the paint or introducing slight distortions to the quarter.
In fact, aside from removing the flares to properly clean, seal and rustproof the areas underneath, its probably a good idea to leave them on during the entire refinishing process.

Does anyone have a good shot of how the factory finished off the quarters for the flares, or did they just drill holes in the existing quarter?

Here's how not to do a flare -

like most parts on vintage 70's lambo's due to the low production numbers, i reckon most parts are sourced else where. what sets lamborghini apart from 2nd tier manufactures is they had the capacity to engineering and build there own gearbox and motors.

its not some much as a lack of curvature of the windshield that requires the need for pantograph type wiper but the aspect ratio of the glass itself. to get a decent sweep area on a very tall shaped windshield a double pivot was need. the mercedes 190E had a pretty neat central wiper solution that had a roller cam action that sweped in a "W" motion that covered the upper corners of the windshield. the other extreme is the 3 short wipers on an E-type for its truncated screen.

i always marveled how well a wiper blade works on a flat glass. my old esprit also had a nearly flat windshield with a pantograph wiper . it would wipe away rain clean as a whistle without any streaking.

    cheers

Sweet, I've been looking for good tool kit shots. I assume the kits are specific to lp400 and early S only?

I found an 80's kit and it was much different...

As I have already pointed out, with such an early car, standard production appointments would likely not all have been in place...

Emilio: This is a question you must kindly ask Ingegnere Gian Paolo Dallara.

Car & Driver have already spoken publicly about this issue in their December 1975 magazine, and they state that the claim was made to them by the factory.

Me, I know nothing, but it does feel quick compared to others, as has been said before.

Damn Tony. I take it that engine is from the Cannonball Countach. The thing looks better than new. Impeccable work, as always.
