Did Pirelli actually come out and say they are reproducing these tires?

Image Unavailable, Please Login Posted this on the ‘Downdraft’ Countach thread but might be of interest here too. Recently inspected an ‘87 Countach QV that hadn’t been driven since 1996. Car had its original Pirelli P7r tyres still fitted..

    Hi

I am always very reserved about telling people when a tyre will actually be available to purchase. However yesterday we had a great day because Pirelli are producing some important high performance crossply tyres for sports cars of the '50s and as a result we had some tyres over for testing at a local track, Blyton Park. where i had some friends over with sports race cars with 16" wheels and as a result a couple of chaps from Pirelli Milan came over for the testing.

Of course while they were here i popped the question about the Countach tyres, which are well on the way. they have made some prototypes so they are very much in the pipe line. which of course is very exciting.

When i first started flogging tyres for vintage and classic cars i used to pass on dates i was given about the production of tyres, and it regularly came back to bite me, there are several possible hurdles in the way, that can slow down the process of them actually being available to purchase. I have learned to become more cagey, because when it boils down to it the are not available until they are actually here on the shelf, and i don't want to get you all too excited, I don't want to give you a date and then let you down. But they are close.

I will let you know when they are here.

    Hi,
Have you ever questioned them in regards to the 285/40 15 inch tires?

I have heard independently that the new P7 rears are close!

Meanwhile, I just found out that there were no less than 5 variants of the P7 when the tire was launched, P7 rally, P7 Safari, P7 slick, P7 intermediate, and P7 road tires as used on the Countach.

Dougal, thanks so much for all your effort to push this through.

Just for clarification: these tires are the P7 and not the P7R?

Not to speak for Pirelli or Dougal, but I believe the rears are based on the final variant, the P7R.

It remains to be seen if they will be named P7R, but they ought to be significantly superior in terms of longevity & performance, because current build materials & compounds are significantly superior to those available @ 30 years ago, we've come a long way.

I am excited to try the new uinits on a car which I know has had its suspension properly sorted.

    Thanks for the reply.

Beggars can’t be choosers I guess. I’m very excited for the release of these tires nonetheless.

The P7 tire will still look more correct than the P Zero System. I’m sure with modern compounds the difference in performance is negligible.

I would be thrilled if the P7R logo was present.

That's obvious, but read the lines: BK, RB and M+S types. 2 had sand lips, the other one didn't.

    Hi

They will be P7, because they have to tie in with the other P7 tyres that are currently being made. they are currently undergoing Pirelli's indoor testing. and they are fine tuning the side wall design to get them as correct as possible.

I have seen pictures of some of the test tyres taken by a mobile phone, which sadly i am not allowed to post. But it is good news because they are well on with the project. so lets hope the testing all goes well, and doesn't cause any hold ups, and that the guys who work in the factory don't have too much time off for Christmas.

Yes indeed! One just has to look at the date this thread was started (Dec. 2015) and realize its been nearly 2 years with probably another few months to go before they are available to the public. Thank goodness my P-Zero’s are still in good shape. :)
I think all of us with Countach’s have learned the art of patience.

I know it is not really the news you Countach chaps are looking for but believe me it is a sign that things are moving in the right direction, as there is a small amount of capacity afforded to getting new tyres developed for the classic car market and just yesterday i received a first delivery of one of them which is a 175/70R13 CN36 for the Ford Escort Mexico https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/tyres/175-70x13.html

It is not the one you want, but it does just show that they are moving forward. i will keep you in the loop Image Unavailable, Please Login

Folks have to understand that it is not possible to go from indoor test to our cars in a couple months. If anyone remembers the 2012 batch, it was a long time by the time we got them. Especially in the US. I think we were the last of the bunch.
