I recently purchased a 1979 308 gts with 26k on the clock. It is at this point completely stock and original with the 30k allready done. However i want to lower it on 17 inch hre 541's and cut in a deck into the unmolested dash. I would also like to suck in the bumpers and color code them.

My first question is how bad will the mods devalue the car?

My second question is what exhausts would you suggest and will the car need rejetted if i do this?

    1. Don't cut the coils to lower the car. Use purpose built Billstiens of something similar. 17's look okay on 308's but the older body styles don't do well with Bling wheels. (Just my opinion)

    2. No reason to hack the dash. Todays decks fit just fine in the space allowed, put the CD changer in the trunk.

    3. Painting the rubber bumpers is a matter of taste. The paint will crack if you bump something though. Consider the light weight Euro bumpers. I pushed the bumpers in on mine. Helps the look a lot.

    4. Tubi exhaust is the loudest and the prettiest, also the most expensive. Ansa sport exhaust is another option. If you remove the 'cats' when installing the new exhaust you will need to rejet.

Permanant, non-reversable mods on your car will seriously devalue it. If the mods are bolt on, bolt off then it won't be as much. All of my mods are reversable.

I had a guy CAREFULLY cut the new CD deck into my dash.
It barely fits and looks good.

Any thing past 16" is too much, IMO as well.

Bumpers, no comment. It should match the year of the car.
One of my '77s was updated with rear spoiler and black front louvers. I'm taking it off and going back.

Spasso is correct. Stock is required for top value.

Go with ANSA, $1700. w/o the cats.

As a purist, I would opt for keeping it stock, and focusing on proper maintenance, rather that modifications. As previously mentioned, if you do want to go forward with the mod's, try not do something that isn't reversible. Bigger wheels? Why not? Just keep all the original stuff stored away, should the next owner want it to be a little more stock.

And indeed, a stock car will have a higher resale value.

I meant a single din cd player nothing larger just what will fit. I was thinking of using coilovers for suspension so everything i would do would be reversable.

Where can i get the euro bumpers and the tubi exhaust?

    Thank you

    Nick

hmmmm anyone know where i can get used euro bumpers for a 78 gts? the ones i ordered turned out to be for a QV and would not fit without serious , permanent mods to the car. my ad on ferrariads has been running a while. i did get a new euro front valence. i also need to get a QV or similar grill to go with the new horsie and trim pieces!!

Michael check with Butch Hooper, he makes a bolt on euro bumper, the real Euro bumper require modifications for the mounting hardware, the one I bought from Butch mounted to the US bumper shocks

I put one of Butches euro bumpers on the back of my car, it bolted on perfectly. I think it is a pretty nice piece. Also if you want to color match (I didn't), it's much easier to paint the fiberglass than plastic.

I put on a GTO valance and euro GTO bumper I bought from Jim Carpenter, but his delivery is sketchy at best, and I had to make specail brackets to adapt the bumper. Butch also has euro 308 or GTO bumpers that will bolt on, but I was being cheap and went to Jim because he was $200 less I think.....

    Nice car.....

Anyways....as a dealer my experience dictates that "originality" and "reversibility" are the two most important things that I look for when appraising a car.....F-car....P-car...whatever.
