I just cleaned the fan and "ducts" of my laptop ... and yet the fan is always on whenever I have a program running, be it Firefox or Word ... it just runs nearly all the time. I say nearly because it does stop for a second or two once in a while if the computer is sitting there doing nothing.

While lookin for SpeedFan, I noticed there's also CHC (Centrino Hardware Control), looks a bit better than SpeedFan.

So here I am, not sure what to do.

It says CPU temp is 41C, and HD temp 34C, and apparently I'm already in the least power hungry mode. However, both SpeedFan and CHC say there is no hardware control on the fan itself. CPU Clock is 601MHz all the time (some glimpses at 1500, but that's it)

From what I understand, the CPU is running cool (I thought 50-55C was ok -edit, intel's website says 100C!!! http://www.intel.com/support/processors/mobile/pm/sb/cs-007971.htm -) and the fan is annoying me, and I can't turn it off. And I'm already in the least powerful mode.

Since I'm typing this live, it's probably just a mess, so I'll wrap it up.

The fan is almost constantly running, and I just cleaned it (so it's not clogged with dust).
    I installed SpeedFan and CHC
CPU temp is reasonable, and I have no hardware control on the fan, whi is running as I type.
    WTF can I do now?

    TIA

edit - in CPU Voltage tab of CHC, I have 2 adjustments, on is "On Multiplier of" (set to the minimu, 6) and Voltage. I can drop the voltage still (from 0.988V all the way to 0.700V). Is there any risk in doing so? Wouldn't that calm down the heat even more, and hopefully be enough for the fan to shut up?

Okay let's do a little basics first.

Your CPU should not reach more than 60C, if it does, you have a serious problem.

With that out of the way...

    What model laptop?

What kind of CPU do you have?

Don't mess with your voltage just yet.

Model is a Sony Vaio VGN-S26C
    CPU is a Centrino 1.5GHz

Don't worry, I'm just observing right now.The fan is an annoyance, but I'm not ready to trash my puter for it! ;)

    Ah, another Sony.. :( :)

So your computer does not have the ability to slow down the fan?
Has it ever had that ability ?

Well, I've never had any control on the fan, but it does vary in speed, depending on how demading I am (with the amount of software I use) ...
