Afternoon everyone. I have enjoyed learning on this site for years; well before I purchased my first Ferrari. I now have a 348 spider with 50k miles. Drive it every weekend. Have owned it since October. It's run beautifully. A couple of months ago the gas gauge got down to between 1/4 and 1/2 tank (the lowest it had gotten to in my ownership) and when I accelerated from a dead stop the engine groaned and it felt like half the cylinders weren’t firing. I was actually on my way to fill it up when that occurred and after filling the tank it ran great and has run perfectly since then for many weeks. This past weekend the gauge got to half full and as I was heading to the gas station and cruising at about 30 mph on a flat road, the car stalled; still had power (radio going, but no engine?! I pulled over and it started right back up no issues; I filled it up and it ran great all the way home. I'm not sure if the incidents are related or not. Any thoughts on what could be going on there? Any thoughts you have would be welcomed. In looking back into old forums on this site and discussing this with the fella I purchased the car from who is a mechanic, I'm thinking perhaps a Crank Sensor? I'm in Charleston SC so if anyone knows of a good mechanic to trust the car to here I'd be grateful for any input there as well. Thanks! T
So you went from one bank (possibly) to no banks. Seems odd that it would be a (single) crank sensor or, for that matter, a single pump. That is not to say both fuel pumps aren't suffering from some kind of, say, contamination. Not much to work with here, especially with such an intermittent problem. Even if you checked fuel pressures, it might not show any problems. Do you know how to use the Motronic ECU test buttons? I was going to ask if you had an aftermarket alarm/immobiliser system, but I can't see how that would affect one bank. Maybe check the grounds on the engine and chassis in the engine bay. Check the fuse panel in the passenger footwell for melting fuses. Unplug and refit all the relays to make sure they are not too loose. Check the relay pins for signs of contamination. Sometimes just resetting a relay a few times can clean up the pins sufficiently.
Qavion thanks so much for your response/input. Grounds in the engine bay look ok to my untrained eye. I checked the fuse box and fuses look ok. Pulled the relays and perhaps one of them was loose (or it could be my wishful thinking); I reset them. Pins look nice and clean. I was limited on time but will fire her up and take her for a drive tomorrow/Saturday and see if I have any issues. I'm a little worried about getting stranded but... I watched a video on the pulling the codes with the ECU test buttons behind the seats. Didn't look too difficult, but had to laugh at the Morse Code delivery system Ferrari uses! I may give that a try as well. Thank you again for taking the time to give me your thoughts. Really appreciate it. Alot of knowledge on this site. If anyone thinks of anything else I'm all ears. Appreciate it!
They really need to be checked with an ohmmeter. Grounds should be less than 0.2 ohms (according to the worshop manuals). When I was checking my grounds, I got over 1 ohm, which really isn't good. When I used to work on aircraft, some of the ground resistances had to be 0.001 ohms.
OK gotcha on the grounds. I was thinking you meant check them to see if they were possibly loose and or corroded. Got it! Thanks!
