Ok...here I have a question. I am trying to figure out if the mechanic I am talking to is smoking crack, or on to something... My car still has the airpump that was used for the thermoreactor exhaust, but it is not used since I put a Tubi exhaust on the car. (I live in Washington, do not need to pass emission tests) So, the mechanic (a vintage Alfa guy) is suggesting to hook up that airpump to evacuate the air out of the crankcase and then feed it back into the air intake ??? He claims it will gain extra horsepower??? Any thoughts? Thanks, Jan
Your mechanic is smoking crack. There is no need to hook up a crankcase evacuation system on a a stock 308. It is a waste of time and money, and you will not notice any increase in performance. On very high performance engines (Top fuel dragsters, Pro-stock car and bikes) engine builders use very thin piston rings in order to reduce friction. In order to make the rings seal well for maximum horsepower they use very high performance pan evacuation pumps that pull a vacuum on the crankcase. If the rest of your motor is stock, then the factory crankcase vapor system works fine. Disconnect and remove the air injection pump. You will gain more performance from the loss of the drag of the pump and the reduction of weight than any Rube Goldberg pan evacuation pump.
haha...."Rube Goldberg pump" is a pretty good description, I guess It did sound a bit too good to be true. Thanks for the feedback!
