Cranking 550 with accelerator fully depressed

    After my vehicles sit for awhile, I like to crank them with the gas pedal floored in order to circulate some oil first before they start. It seems that my 550 does not respond to this method and fires up right away regardless. Any ideas as to why this happens? Is there another easy way to cancel fuel or spark to achieve the same result?

    Firstly, you shouldn’t floor the pedal for start. The ECUs need to know where idle is (as sensed by the throttle position sensors). From idle, "full throttle" is computed.

    I can’t think of any easy ways of inhibiting fuel. You’d have to pull the fuel pump relays or fuses.

    I don't want it to start. Looking for some cranking time to circulate some oil first.

    "Flooring" a fuel injected car while cranking has been the de facto method of clearing a possible flooded condition forever. It is designed to shut off the fuel supply in a cranking condition. Really - you've never done it? Somewhat surprised you are unaware of the feature...

    Don't be surprised. I'm not a mechanic. I just read the manuals and listen to the experts on the FChat forum ;)

    The potentiometer is placed on the throttle
    shaft axis and informs the ECU about throttle
    opening, continuously and proportionally
    to the support shaft rotation angle.-
    Each time the engine is started, the ECU
    regulates itself on the idle position. The
    engine must therefore be started without
    pressing the accelerator pedal.


    So if it started, it might be best to restart it.

    That’s why I suggested pulling the relays or fuses.

    Did it start immediately or after a short delay? I just read that some Corvettes start after a 3 second delay. I can't imagine that this would be sufficient to circulate the oil throughout a dry sump system.

    I am very surprised anyone believes that. Flooring the pedal is a correct way to clear carbs but most assuredly it is not a way to do anything of a positive nature in an injected engine. Stop now.

    Oil film lubes an engine at start up. The oil film never leaves. Quit second guessing the people who built it.

    Some more modern ECUs are programmed so that flooring the throttle (TPS = 100%) when cranking the engine cuts the fuel injection, but it is not the case with older ECUs such as the Bosch M5.2.

    This is the information I was after. Thus the 550 does not have this feature. Thanks!

    BTW - every fuel injected domestic/US vehicle I have had does include this function, thus the basis for my question.

    So, to continue the thought while it is being addressed here...at what point (if any) would you consider "pre-oiling" to be of value? And how long can a vehicle "sit" and safely be restarted?

    When assembled or if the oil plumbing is taken apart for service. The supply side remains full after shut off so much but not all of the oil runs through it slowly into the oil pan. But it remains full for immediate oil supply at start up.

    More importantly fuel injection largely meters fuel based on throttle position. Full throttle during cranking in most cases sends very large quantities of fuel into an engine thats not burning it promoting fouling plugs, washing down cylinders and dilution of oil. Carbs on the other hand meter fuel based on air velocity which is slowed, leaning it with WOT during cranking which has been SOP for clearing a flooded engine since the Model T.

    Before trying to fix that which is not broken its best to understand how it works.

    Which is a recent development even in American cars and represents a minority of types of fuel injected cars.
