I would like to move from knowing "everything about something" to knowing "something about everything". I met someone a while back who was like that and it amazed me at how specialized my knowledge was. I was also amazed at how much I knew nothing about.

I would like to be more well rounded, so I am asking for your help.

I would like to create an Exam. I would like your suggestions as to what a "well rounded man" should know. For example, I don't know which wines I will see on most menus, or anything about wines. Or how to prepare a steak. Or if you don't cook certain foods at all or enough what you're risking.

People also mention different medical conditions like everyone knows all about them but I don't. So tell me which conditions I should know about, and what I should know about them.

Any general knowledge areas would be appreciated. There is no limit except that you have to qualify it in your mind by asking "Should every well rounded man know this"? Don't get esoteric on me.

Shopping tips. Gardening tips. Wildlife tips. Survival tips. How many continents are there. How many planets in our solar system. What is the "spring equinox". How many books are in the Bible. How to make tea! You name it, but it shouldn't be just "guy knowledge". I mention "tea" as an inside joke because I dated a girl and she wanted me to make tea for more than one and I was stumped 'cause I only drink coffee. I felt like an idiot. (mind your tongue men...) I just want to be more well rounded than that.

When you make a suggestion I will then start creating a list of questions. So you might say: "The best way to BBQ a steak is 7 minutes a side". I will then reword that into "How long should you BBQ a steak"? Then follow with the answer in a separate area. You will be amazed at how reviewing this Exam over and over will drill it in for good. I will keep adding to the Exam as we go, and post the current form occasionally.

So fire away. What should I know?

And in advance, thank you very much.

    Wes

I'd like to know your findings. Heck, I might learn something, too. I had a professor, who once said that you are not civilized unless you've read the Bible. He was an ass on a personal level (Pursey Bardot), but his words were likely true on an academic level. I guess that's my contribution to your search, but now days I would add the Koran and so on as well.

Be good at math. Everyone is impressed when you can add, subtract, multiply or divide large numbers in your head. From figuring tips to determining whether one large pizza is a better deal than two medium pizzas.

The well-rounded man should not have to pull out a calculator for simple everyday math problems.

A quick search will provide numerous avenues for improving your math skills. This book helped me:

Another tip would be to visit Wikipedia each day and just hit "Random article".

I just did that and learned that a "yunomi" is a ceramic teacup used for informal tea drinking by the Japanese. So if you at a business dinner with some prospective Japanese clients you will probably be served your tea in a chawan, but if you are invited over to a Japanese person's home you will be served your tea in a yunomi.

I hit random again and learned that the 2006 Miss USA pagent was the 55th and held in Baltimore, won by Miss Kentucky Tara Conner.

A third push told me about data hierarchy and the organization of files and records.

You have to know this stuff when you are a well rounded man.

I have a client who read the entire Encylcopedia Brittanica and then wrote a book about it. They are making it into a movie. I think he learned something in the process.

A Classical education would include languages so you are not limited by the materials written or translated in your native tongue, travel, so you could learn first hand about differences in culture, attitudes and hygiene, a third would be to study the bodies of literature that have to do with methodologies and analytic approaches to learning, so you realize that it isn't what you know that counts, but how to find, learn about it and understand it, fourth, good organizational skills to manage and use what you know and learn, and fifth, probably some study of philosophy to give context to 'learning' as only one form of growth as a human being. The others include things like understanding and appreciating music, art, training in physical disciplines and self-understanding, which is the hardest to obtain and the least easily learned.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

The proper term is not the "spring equinox" it is the "Vernal Equinox"

The earth is tilted 23.5° on its axis as it revolves about the sun. That's what gives us our seasons. The angle of the sun relative to the equator is called "declination". When the sun is at it's northernmost declination, 23.5° north, we have the summer solstice and it marks the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. As the earth continues around the sun from this point the declination gets less and less until it becomes 0°. This marks the Autumnal equinox and if you are standing on the equator the sun will be directly overhead at noon. The length of the day will also be the same all over the world. As the earth continues on its journey the declination becomes more and more to the south until it reaches 23.5° south. This will be the winter solstice and mark the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. After that the sun will begin it's northern movement and when it again reaches the equator and the declination is 0° you will have the vernal equinox marking the start of spring.

The limits of the sun's movement are termed the "tropics" The Tropic of Cancer is at 23.5° north and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5° south. The Arctic and Antarctic circles are at around 66.5° north and south and represent the points where the sun will not rise or set during the solstices. The latitudes in between the tropics and the arctics are called the temperate zones.

Hope this info helps you to become a well rounded man.

If you are a well rounded man . . . You should be able to go to the drag strip on Friday night, and understand what you're watching. You should be able to go to the opera on Saturday (Verdi, Wagner, Smetana [sp?]) and understand what you are hearing. You should read Joyce, and have a favorite comic strip. Read books on the history of science, art and music history, and philosophy. Understanding geometry and calculus is more vital than being a wizard at long division. If you need to bone up on science, subscribe to Science News. If you tend to ignore news and politics outside of the US, read The Economist along with a US news paper. The well rounded man is one who has a good grasp of the basic concepts of many disciplines and is capable of critical thinking. He may always (and should) ask questions about novel ideas and arguements, but he needs to be able to put these new claims in context.

Dont spend a lot of time trying to learn trivia to impress others. If that is what you want watch Jeopardy.Read a variety of things and expose yourself to various cultures and activities. You will no doubt find many interesting things you did not know were out there. Do not however try to make people think you are bright by spouting off about obscure bits of information. The only ones you will impress are those who you probably are not interested in knowing. Become proficient in your job ,do it well and ethically. When a subject comes up that you are not familiar with ask intelligent questions. People appreciate others who are really interested. When the subject is that which you know offer restrained comments. An well read, honest ,decent person is probably as well rounded as any of us need to be. Mike
