Turns out I have $20 in collections from a $30 "late" parking ticket from 2007. I have tried to contact the company to pay this $20 just to get this stupid thing off my report, but it appears they are out of business.

BBB Accreditation expired in Aug, and it looks like the company has gone out of business.

Next steps to take to get this thing off my report? Don't feel like waiting until 2014 for it to fall off.

dispute the charge to the credit reporting agencies and if the company did go out of business and it cannot be shown as a legitimate issue it should come off of your report. If you did however owe the charge and were late for whatever reason than it will stay.

    Few things:

Dispute in writing, and make them provide the information of who (name) confirmed the debt, amount owed, date it was first owed, and who was the original creditor (before the collection company).

If they can't they should delete. Don't do the internet dispute, you will get some blanket automatic reply.

Make sure the debt hasn't been sold again to another collection company.

Yea, I seem to recall if you dispute in writing they in turn send a letter to the creditor. If they don't respond within a certain time frame then it gets removed.
