Critique on a photo, please?

I took this photo over the weekend at the Kansas City World of Wheels, and spent a good chunk of time making it the way it is. I know it isn't a great job with the S/C, but could I get some feedback on this?

Is that the natural color of the car? That off-yellowish? Just wondering. Interesting color to compliment the black.

As long as you didn't change the color itself, I think it looks fine.

Thanks! I enhanced the color just slightly, to make it "pop" a bit after the selective. But yes, that is the color that was on the car.

 

Just my personal taste, but I would have cropped in closer on the car, as I'm not really all that interested in random people in my photographs.

Also, why did it take you so long to do the black and white effect? That should be a snap with a few layer masks. I'd call adding that effect an additional 5-10 minutes per image on my workflow.

 

Well, I used the Color Replacement tool to get rid of the color, instead of doing masks. I'm still a bit novice to CS4, so I don't know the better, easier ways to. (I hope that made sense )

 

+1 here. I like to focus on the car and the subtle details that make the car what it is visually. The background and especially people in the background are not my biggest priority. However, when I need to do a full shot with a background, I make sure not to get people in it. If I do, I edit them out. Do a search online for the tutorials on isolating one specific color, it should not take longer than 10 minutes. Check out my site to see what I focus on. www.mcovephoto.com

10 minutes? Even with my old computer, it shouldn't take more than 3 minutes retaining full resolution.

Critique? I don't like most color/ desaturated combined photos. It can work; but I'd recommend looking at professional's work with doing such before just assuming. It doesn't work well here.

Framing isn't that great (my eyes are drawn to the upper right, where there is nothing), and the horizon is off. At least you see the whole car. I'm also not a fan of a typical "standing" shot that 99% of the people tend to do.

Practice practice practice.

Finally, subscribe to silver. I don't want to click a link to some silly site to see a photo that you want critiqued.

 

just being realistic... why not just post what you saw? Not what the post processing
revealed.... guess I'm old school - photographer for many years, pro for most of the
80's and early 90's, using just film and talent - no "post processing" tools other than
dodge and burn requests to the lab, plus cropping. I'd just like to see what you
SAW with your EYES. That's a great way to judge a photo - old school style, which
still earns points in the photo world.

Just sayin....

 

I don't know if there is really any critique for this photo, it's an average photo most people wouldn't spend there time to look at... I took a quick browse over some of your photos and doesn't seem you have an eye for "pro photographs", but that's just my opinion... you will get better overtime.

 

reminds me of a few i took over last weekend in pittsburgh but it looks great not quite the cars i like but pretty nice

 

the people on the right and the verticals not being vertical are the biggest problems. the color edit is OK, not bad, not great. the other problem I have is the bottom half of the car is black, you edited the rest of the image to be b/w. I think the image might have been better if the car was yellow & another color as the complete car would stand out as opposed to the top yellow portion

car show shots are difficult due to all the misc. around that pollute the frame. this suffers from that a good deal.

as was mentioned, keep shooting.

 

Most of the time i would agree with you but sometimes the people can make the picture, that is if you are trying to tell the story of the show and not just record the car. Like in this photo if it was a cropped closer to the two guys looking under the hood it could make interesting photo.
