I know that this is disgusting, but I found this raoch my food at the Hattiesburg Cracker Barrel. Corporate loss prevention contacted me and offered me a Gift Certificate for a free meal as compensation. I reported it to the Mississippi Department of Health. Perhaps John H can provide free legal advise!!

Not sure what you could sue for. Emotional distress?

Not sure if free food would be compensation. Would you ever want to eat at a Cracker Barrel again?
Guess you could threaten to go to the press- but they may just offer more coupons. Might make Christmas gifts.

Frank, the risk management guy asked if I ate any of the bug. I told him "I didn't count the legs" If my wife would have been there she would have freaked out!

    Buttermilk Pancakes N' Such

Here at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, buttermilk pancake breakfasts are a specialty of ours, prepared from scratch in our kitchens.

Our restaurant’s buttermilk pancakes can be ordered loaded with pecans, mouth-watering Wild Maine Blueberries, catch-of-the-day cockroaches, or can be covered with a variety of toppings -- from golden delicious apples to cherries or peaches or gawd knows what. Whether you like them smothered with Pure Maple syrup, whipped cream, a pat of rich butter, bodily fluids or even some Wild Maine Blueberry syrup, you're sure to find a great buttermilk pancake breakfast to start your day, all day long!

I'd picket the joint with Raid or Roach Motel end-display signage.

Did you order it with anything extra like pecans or choc. chips? would have made it harder to spot.

There was a bug crawling around in my food at Mi Mamacita's yesterday. They made it over for me.

    Oh man.

Well if you actually paid for the meal then they should give that back at the very least, but I would assume you didn't pay for the meal. Other than that really they have no reason to give you anything; honestly the free meal was a waste because no matter how much they give you, as you're unlikely to be a customer of theirs ever again.

Wax has the best reply yet!
    "a variety of toppings" Yummy!

The manager said the meal was comp and quickly removed my plate. He told me that they sprayed last night. That didn't make it any better, now it was not only a dead roach it was a poisoned roach. I held him up long enough to snap a shot with my cell phone. What "buggs me" most is that I was with a customer from my largest account. He actually thought it was kind of funny and ribbed me about it the rest of the day. I guess if we really knew what the kitchens look like, none of us would eat out.

As luck would have it I'm meeting a potential business partner at Cracker Barrel (Slidell) this morning! The last time I was there was pre-Katrina and I wasn't a fan of the place. When I lived in Memphis we ate at one quite frequently but not impressed with the Slidell location.

    Waitress...I'll just have water, bottled.

Anyone seen the new show Kitchen Nightmares? The show is about failing restaurants in need of help to get going. Most have filthy kitchens and there was one in NY city that was rodent, fly and roach infested.

In my limited foodservice experience it seemed like I did more cleaning than actual food prep.

Even when we were serving food out of trailers to the immigrant workers right after Katrina, we had everything spotless twice a day.

    Sounds like poor management.

Reminds me of when I found out that one of the stock rooms (fortunately not the one with food) in a restaurant I worked in was infested by roaches. Thing is I'd never suspect that place would ever have a problem with pests - nice, clean... turned out though that the kitchen staff had been seeing cockroaches before (and weren't all to bothered with the news). It really makes you think twice about eating out.

There is no option for what you should do:

Contact the State Board of Health........... Think about the others that eat there. People could be getting sick or worse.....

And yes a free <possibly roach included> meal is, well, not appealing...

Yeah there's a good website like that similar to that one for Louisiana. I try not to visit it for fear of finding out things I'd rather not know. :D
