Just bought an 83. Looking at pictures online I have not seen any cars with a grille like this one. Anyone know the story? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Don't know the story but looks like the grill opening has been removed along with the bumper. Probably to replace what looks like a new A/C condensor. Horn trumpets have been repositioned also. If you want the original look of the grill look to spend some bucks. Good luck with sorting it out.
*facepalm* That's amazing... To make room for those aftermarket lights, they bent the ^%$&^% out of the grill bars, to burn up the length of the horizontal bars. Why wouldn't they just cut them to make room? Or use a proper Euro grill, which had room for the "flash to pass" lights. That's a tragedy....you need a new grill to allow for those lights, or you need to take those lights out. That is a Euro style bumper, so note that, when you order the new grill. Is this a Euro 308??? I guess you might have luck trying to make that one straight, but I'm kind of doubting 6the outcome..
It appears that it was bent so that the attachment points would reach above and below. Maybe that grill could be straightened out, trimmed and remounted to look like something that doesn't need braces. Be creative, by the way we call this "sorting out" and it's fun.
The grills are not to hard to disassemble and straighten out, but you'll still be missing a couple horizontal slats. I had to build a custom grill for my car and scavenged a few extra slats from bent grills from GT Car parts. So with a little fabrication and elbow grease it didn't cost a lot.
The VIN shows the car is a Euro spec model. I have looked at the grille very closely and it is unaltered. The mounting bolt brackets/tabs are at top and bottom. The car is in very nice condition with 29,000 miles. It was federalized with speedo change and side marker lights etc. Also has body color vents and has not been repainted. Is this 308 from Omaha? If it is, I had talked with the original owner before he sold it to the Classic car dealer last month. He had replaced the a/c condenser back in 2005 or so. It's also due for a major service. Nice car - I almost pulled the trigger on this one two months ago. Enjoy it!
"Sorted" now. The grill was rebent and reinstalled. It did not need any trimming and the original mounts fit. I have no idea why anyone would have changed the original. Now looks normal.
Great!!! Looking at it they may have been trying to "make" the upper attachment points work. There's some little straps the go there (on mine) that come down to meet the grill. Very glad you were able to tweek it back!!
If you scrap your grill I may cough up cash for it. My 328 is missing its lower grill and I may be able to section a part of yours and make one. I don't know how you would straighten that to its original shape without lots of heat.
Sorry,, did not read to the bottom of the thread. Very good to know that are ductile. Going to fab one for my 328 I guess.
Oh Man!! Previous owner his car, his style.... I get it. Honestly ya gotta draw the line. These are not Ford Pintos, and/or even hundreds of thoudsands made. This owner should have built himself a Pontiac Fiero replica 308 and mistreat it all he wants.
