Yesterday I spent the day with my oldest " airline son" and we got into discussing crosswind landings. I went back to my games of landing on the beach near my house in Florida and I recalled setting up approaches out over the water and letting the off-shore breeze carry me onto the beach where I " put the wing down" and landed. Sometimes I didn't estimate the distance out from the beach to set up and I missed my point of arrival and had to make a go-around. It always seemed to me to be a useless game but fun. BUT many times years later I found it to be very useful in coping with the crosswinds in some landing situations.
That beach is now nothing but condos, fences, cabanas, and No Trespassing signs. I think that I took a slice of a good life when it was on the plate.

    in search of beaches...

around here a fun flight (which I've never attempted) is the Red River between Okie and Tejas. Dried out river with sandbars, just avoid the power lines.

I always avoided white sand and landed in the the dark sand which was wet and solid but sometimes rough. Not good practice, really, but a challenge.
