I went to the Gelsons center at the corner of PCH and Crown Valley in Monarch Beach this morning and discovered a mini Crystal Cove like gathering happening outside the Starbucks.

Lots of hot rods and American muscle, with a sprinkling of interesting Euro vintage stuff like a 300 SL Gullwing.

I guess some people are fed up with the beauracracy that has crept into CC (7am starts, pushy security etc) and have taken their fun elsewhere where they can just turn up and have fun with fellow enthusiasts.

It looks that way. I was there at approx 8.30 and some of the cars were leaving.

The RAC's were handing out "keystone cop" tickets today for cars with for sale signs on them at CC. Seems like their hoping people will be turned off. I still think CC is the best value for the $$ ;)

Are you not allowed to put up for sale signs? Who made that rule?

I was actually about to put a car up for sale there in the next couple of weeks...hm...

Yeah, I saw a guy who looked like a bloody park ranger write a ticket for the red 360. Couldn't figure out what the heck he was doing at first, and my car was right next to the 360.

Might have to have a look at this other venue although I haven't had any bad experiences at CC yet and still enjoy it.

    Cheers

If I wasn't so picture addicted I probably would have stopped going to CC...I guess I still go because A) The RAC dont hassle me in my lowly Mustang usually, B) I love seeing everybody!, and C) Usually its the same group of cars, but every once in a while something really spectacular shows up and clears up all my doubts about the show...An example would be a few weeks ago with the Carrera GT, F40, Enzo, and several other great cars. Just amazing!!

I have a client who lives in the homes above CC. Yes, the place where the "complaints" have originated. He was present at the homeowners assoc. meeting, when the car show was discussed.

He says that the majority of owners enjoy the car gathering (including him!) Only a couple had anything negative to say. He guesses that the Irvine Co. has either decided on its own, to strangle the "show" ... OR ... they are listening only to a very small number of residents. Either way ... he feels the Irvine Co. is to blame, not the homeowners.

He loves to get up early; walk down to the Starbucks for coffee; and look at the great cars!

    Interesting ...

The truth about Crystal Cove is that it just happened to be the place where a spontaneous outbreak of "car fever" broke out. It's also inevitable that when too many people seem to be having fun wihout anyone in control, authorities, in this case the Irvine Co., get a little bent out of shape. This is a pattern that occurs naturally in American Life. Someone needs to be in charge, dammit!

So it's also inevitable that some of the aforementioned funners will seek to take their fun where the "adults" are not around to tell them what to do. This is the path that CC is on. Once someone decided that there needed to be rules, the spontaneity of the event was destroyed. Cars line up in an orderly fashion instead of wandering in as the wind takes them. It's a pity but it's also inevitable. The establishment will kill a good thing by trying to regulate it and the fun will go elsewhere (to Gelsons for the time being).

I'm sure if we get the local businesses to sign a petition saying they like us coming there we just might get more support from the Irvine Co.

You obviously don't know the Irvine Company...they don't negotiate and with the exception of Starbucks and the restaurant next to them (brain cramp), none of the other business give a hoot or crap about a bunch of cars on Saturday AM. Believe me, I rent 13K of space from them, my rent is being negotiated and flexibility is not exactly part of their vernacular when dealing with tennants...JMHO

Personally for me, I'm willing to give the other place a shot, closer to home and not so much of a early AM event. Seems like I can get out of the house by 7-7:30 and still be OK with parking. In a couple of weeks when I get back from Asia, I will be there,

If you were there at the start, it looks very much the way CC looked. Just an informal gathering of like minded people.

I like CC, but my last visit was unpleasant. Kept out until 7.00 AM, lining up, people sneaking in via the side entrances, bunny cops directing traffic, people diving for parking spaces, 20 minute wait for mediocre coffee, lots of crappy cars that really shouldn't be on display. Not really fun anymore.
